Kevin Feige Teases a More “Classic” Spider-Man in ‘Brand New Day’
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up to be a major reset for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says the film will finally bring the character closer to his classic comic book roots.
Speaking to Empire magazine, Feige explained that this is the first Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to fully embrace the traditional “Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man” version fans know from the comics. According to Feige, the focus is no longer on big crossover events or mentor figures, but on Peter’s everyday life in New York and the simple, lonely reality of being a street-level hero.
“It is the first Spider-Man film that we’ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man,” Feige said. He added, “He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly.”
The film picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell caused the world to forget Peter Parker completely. That leaves him isolated, with no friends who remember him, including MJ and Ned. He is now fully on his own in New York City, trying to rebuild his life while continuing to protect the city as Spider-Man.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, speaking in the same report via Empire, said this version of Peter is deeply shaped by loss and emotional struggle. With Aunt May and Tony Stark gone, Peter channels everything into being Spider-Man, even when it starts to affect his mental health.
“He is dedicating his entire existence to his job. That’s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable,” Cretton said. “I think most people at certain points in our lives have gone through loss. At least for me, and I think for many people, the result can be: ‘Screw it. I’m just going to work. I’m going to do nothing else but work.’ That’s obviously not the most healthy state.”
Producer Amy Pascal also emphasized that the film is less about giant universe-ending threats and more about Peter’s inner world. She described it as a more emotional story where the stakes are personal rather than cosmic.
“[Brand New Day] is a more internal movie,” Pascal said. “And the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, and Tramell Tillman, among others. It is produced by Marvel Studios, Sony Pictures, and Pascal Pictures.
Te story follows Peter as he patrols New York alone while dealing with new changes in his powers and a growing sense of isolation. The film is also expected to bring him into contact with street-level characters like the Punisher and Hulk, while exploring his identity without the support system he once had.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release on July 31 and is being described by Marvel as the beginning of a new phase for the character, one that finally puts Peter Parker back where he started: alone, grounded, and responsible for protecting his city.
