The MCU rumor mill never truly sleeps, but every so often a piece of speculation lands with enough weight to stop the internet cold. That happened earlier this week when the latest buzz out of Hollywood pointed directly at one of the biggest movie stars alive, and the question everyone is now asking is not whether it could happen, but which corner of the Marvel universe he would inhabit.

According to industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, who posted on X, Brad Pitt is reportedly being considered for a “huge” role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That single post exploded across social media, pulling in more than 42,000 views almost immediately as fans started speculating about who Pitt could possibly play.

Brad Pitt’s Existing Marvel History Makes This Rumor Feel Like Unfinished Business

Before diving into the dream casting scenarios, it is worth remembering that Pitt technically has Marvel history already. After director David Leitch explained how a scheduling conflict forced Brad Pitt to give up on an earlier MCU opportunity, the actor was offered the short cameo of Telford Porter, also known as Vanisher.

His appearance lasted only a couple of seconds during the movie’s hilariously disastrous skydiving sequence in ‘Deadpool 2’, but it became one of the film’s funniest surprise cameos.

Leitch and Reynolds had actually pitched the Cable role to Pitt, even creating concept art for the character, with Leitch confirming “Yeah, we went to pitch Brad, Ryan, and I. And we had concept art.” Despite being “intrigued,” Pitt was unable to accept the role due to scheduling conflicts, and the part ultimately went to Josh Brolin.

That history makes the current rumor feel even more like unfinished business between Pitt and Marvel Studios, a story that never quite got the ending it deserved the first time around. If Marvel is seriously circling him for something massive, it would represent a years-in-the-making correction to one of the franchise’s great casting near-misses.

The Hyperion Possibility: Marvel’s Answer to Superman

Of all the characters thrown into the speculation fire, Hyperion has the longest paper trail attached to Pitt’s name. There has been a lot of talk since mid-2020 that Marvel Studios was considering Brad Pitt for the role of Zhib-Ran, otherwise known as Hyperion, an extraterrestrial with flight, super strength, and almost every other superpower under the sun.

Purposefully modeled on Superman, Hyperion is an Eternal and the leader of the Squadron Supreme, which is likewise modeled on the Justice League, with members based on other famous DC heroes including Nighthawk, Power Princess, and Whizzer.

Brad Pitt Reportedly in Talks for a Major MCU Role

The character is essentially Marvel’s deliberate answer to DC’s most iconic figure, and casting someone with Pitt’s gravitational pull in that role would make a very clear statement about what kind of movie Marvel wants to make.

Sources previously noted that it is entirely possible for Pitt to play two roles, just as Josh Brolin did as Thanos in the ‘Avengers’ films and Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’. That precedent alone keeps multiple doors open simultaneously, which is very much by Marvel’s design.

The Villain Case: Magneto and the Weight of the X-Men Era

Not every piece of speculation has landed on the heroic side of the roster. Sources had previously noted that Marvel was looking at Pitt for a major villainous part, with possibilities including Kang or Galactus floated at the time.

Both of those roles have since been filled by other actors, which actually narrows the field in an interesting way and redirects the villain conversation toward a character where Pitt’s specific kind of screen presence would land hardest.

Cinemablend noted that Pitt is getting closer to the age that would be required to play Magneto, closer than his ‘Inglourious Basterds’ co-star and ‘X-Men’ veteran Michael Fassbender currently is, and that Pitt certainly has the range that such a complex comic book villain requires. The timing here matters more than it might seem on the surface.

The already confirmed cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ includes Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprising their roles as Professor X and Magneto respectively, alongside Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Alan Cumming returning as their original ‘X-Men’ characters. With McKellen’s Magneto already secured for the Multiverse Saga’s finale, any Pitt villain casting would need to look beyond that specific corner of the X-Men world and toward something entirely new.

The MCU Timeline and Why the Moment Feels Right

Context is everything when evaluating a rumor like this, and the current state of the MCU’s release calendar gives this one unusual momentum. The MCU is currently barreling toward ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and its follow-up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, two films that together represent the climactic conclusion of the entire Multiverse Saga.

The confirmed cast for ‘Doomsday’ is already staggeringly large, pulling together characters from virtually every corner of the Marvel world, from the Fantastic Four to the Thunderbolts to returning X-Men franchise veterans.

Industry insiders note that studios do not usually let this kind of information get out unless they are seriously interested in an actor, which suggests real conversations could be happening behind the scenes. Marvel has not commented, and no official casting confirmation exists, so this remains a rumor for now.

What is clear is that after a cameo built on a cup of coffee and a scheduling conflict that cost him Cable, Pitt’s relationship with Marvel has always felt like it was building toward something real. If you have a character in mind that only Brad Pitt could pull off in the MCU, now is the time to make the case.
