Emilia Clarke is finally clearing up one of the biggest rumors surrounding Game of Thrones. According to the actress, the massive salary reports tied to the HBO fantasy series were far from accurate.

In a recent interview with Variety, Clarke opened up about her years playing Daenerys Targaryen and addressed long-running claims that the show’s main cast members were earning around $300,000 per episode during the final seasons. While the number has been repeated for years online, Clarke said fans seriously overestimated how much money the actors were actually making.

“We didn’t earn that much,” Clarke said while laughing about the rumors. “Can you imagine? I’d have been driving a couple of Porsches!”

The actress explained that while Game of Thrones completely changed her life financially, the salaries discussed online became much bigger than reality over time. Clarke said the success of the series did give her stability and allowed her to help her family, including paying off her parents’ mortgage, but she made it clear that some of the viral figures attached to the cast were exaggerated.

For years, reports about the salaries of the HBO cast became part of the show’s mythology. Because Game of Thrones grew into one of the biggest television series in history, many viewers assumed the actors were earning massive Hollywood-level paychecks during the later seasons. Clarke’s comments now suggest the truth was much more grounded than fans believed.

The actress spoke openly about how complicated her relationship with fame and success became after the show exploded worldwide. She admitted there was a period where she measured success through awards, money, and public attention. After losing the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2019, Clarke said she realized she needed to rethink how she viewed her career.

“I’m embarrassed to admit that not winning an Emmy was a really significant thing,” she told Variety. She explained that after the loss, she went home feeling disappointed and emotionally drained. The next morning, she decided she no longer wanted to define herself through trophies or outside opinions.

Clarke also reflected on how Game of Thrones completely transformed her life beyond finances. She joined the series when she was still very young and largely unknown in Hollywood. According to her, landing the role of Daenerys happened almost by accident after HBO decided to recast parts of the original pilot.

At the time, Clarke was working at the London Film Museum when her agent called her about auditioning for the fantasy series. She admitted she barely knew what Game of Thrones even was before the audition process started.

The actress also discussed the pressure that came with suddenly becoming one of television’s most recognizable faces. While she described the fame as overwhelming at times, she said the public attention eventually faded naturally after the series ended.

“I spent a lot of time trying to understand it,” Clarke explained. “And then you realize it’s just a formula: The less you’re on TV, the less famous you are. It comes and it goes.”

Even after starring in projects connected to Star Wars, Marvel, and Terminator, Clarke admitted not every project worked out the way she hoped. Still, she now says she approaches acting differently and chooses roles based on enjoyment instead of pressure or expectations.

Today, Clarke says she feels grateful for what Game of Thrones gave her, even after the stress, fame, and rumors that followed the show for years. And apparently, despite what the internet believed, it did not come with a garage full of luxury sports cars.
