Spider-Noir series on Prime Video took a lot more work than expected because it was built in two different visual styles.

The show stars Nicolas Cage as a detective version of Spider-Man, and it is set in a dark, film noir world. Viewers can watch it in black and white, which is the original intended style, or in a full color version. Both versions show the same story, but they look very different.

According to people who worked on the series, filming was first planned only for black and white. One crew member, K.C. Lauf, explained how the production was designed for that style from the start. They said, “I worked on this show as the second unit loader. We shot true noir style on set for a B/W delivery. The sets were all painted green, brown, and pink to compliment the gradients of grey in BW. The color pass was not originally planned and required reshoots for almost a year.”

Another crew member, Arsenio J. Alvarez, also talked about how the color version came later in the process. They said, “As someone who was on the post-production side, yes! The color was an after-thought! We got the deliverables then the studio (not Sony) decided they wanted color. So the way to watch it is in Noir (B&W) to get the true filmmaker’s vision.”

Adding the color version caused extra work in post-production and led to reshoots that stretched close to a year. That made the process much longer than originally planned.

Even with the extra work, the show has been well received. It currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics have mostly praised its mix of crime story and superhero action.

The series is entertaining but not quite on the level of some of the biggest Spider-Man movies. It has strong characters and a gripping story.

The two versions of the show offer different experiences. In color, some visual effects stand out more clearly, especially for characters like Sandman. But in black and white, the show matches its intended noir style and artistic design more closely.

All eight episodes of Spider-Noir are now streaming on Prime Video.
