Tom Hardy’s Rumored ‘Mobland’ Exit Triggered Casting Chaos as A-Listers Lined Up to Replace Him
A new report about the series MobLand has revealed confusion and conflicting accounts surrounding Tom Hardy’s involvement in the show.
Earlier reporting from Puck News suggested that Oscar nominee Tom Hardy had been “booted off” the series after reported clashes with producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser.
That version of events described tensions on set, including claims that Hardy was often late and unhappy with how the series shifted from being focused mainly on his character to becoming more of an ensemble story.
However, other sources close to production told a different story. According to those sources, Hardy actually chose not to return for a potential third season after a difficult second season of filming. They say the situation was not a straightforward firing, but more of a breakdown in agreement about how the show was being made.
One source explained the creative tension on set by describing the difference between the key people involved in the production. They said, “You have an A-plus writer who’s got a lot of power and who has a methodology of ‘I don’t know where this is going’ and then an A-plus actor who is used to knowing the entire arc of a character in a story.”
The report describes Season 2 as a challenging production environment. The show originally ran smoothly under creator and showrunner Ronan Bennett, but leadership later shifted to Jez Butterworth. According to the reporting, Butterworth had multiple other projects at the same time, which made the production schedule more unpredictable.
At the same time, Hardy reportedly wanted more access to scripts in advance so he could better understand his character’s direction. The production process, however, involved frequent last-minute script work, which made planning difficult for cast members.
This mismatch in working styles reportedly led to delays on set and added pressure on production budgets. Some insiders described the situation as tense, though not openly hostile.
As Season 2 wrapped, Hardy reportedly decided he did not want to return for another season. According to sources, this decision came after ongoing frustration with how the production was being handled.

After Hardy’s decision, producers reportedly explored possible replacements for a potential Season 3. Actors including Colin Farrell and Idris Elba were approached at different stages as possible leads for the show moving forward.
The situation then became more complicated when social media speculation spread online. Unverified posts began circulating claims about conflicts between cast members, including Helen Mirren, and suggestions that political disagreements were behind Hardy’s departure. These claims were not supported by production sources and were widely disputed.
One insider directly pushed back on those narratives, saying, “There’s never been an Israeli-Palestinian issue. This show had plenty of issues. It never had that.”
According to the report, some of the online rumors gained traction and spread widely, even though they were not confirmed. This led to confusion around what actually happened behind the scenes.
Despite the speculation, sources say discussions are still ongoing about the future of MobLand, including the possibility of continuing with or without Hardy. Some meetings have reportedly taken place between production teams and studio representatives to determine the next steps.
As of now, Paramount+, 101 Studios, and Hardy’s representatives have not publicly commented on the situation.
