Robert Downey Jr. is asking Marvel fans to trust the team behind Avengers: Doomsday as work continues on one of the most anticipated superhero movies in years.

Speaking at SXSW London, Downey shared an honest update about the film and the challenge of following two of Marvel’s biggest successes, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. According to comments made during the event, the actor said the creative team is not trying to simply repeat what worked before.

Instead, they are approaching the project with a fresh mindset.

Downey explained, “What we’ve been laboring so hard and long over [the past year] is… we can’t beat it and we can’t stand on the shoulders of these two giants of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ so we’re literally zeroing out the board.”

He continued by saying, “We’re going to try and earn your trust and respect all over again. And with the likes of these fellas, I think we have a pretty good shot.”

The comments were welcomed by fans who have been curious about Marvel’s plans for the next major Avengers story. Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be one of the biggest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will mark a major turning point for the franchise.

One of the biggest surprises surrounding the movie is Downey’s return to the MCU. After famously playing Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, for more than a decade, the actor is returning in a completely different role. This time, he will portray Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s most famous villains.

According to information released by Marvel Studios, the film will bring together heroes and teams from multiple universes. The Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men are all expected to play important roles in the story as they unite against the threat posed by Doctor Doom.

The road to Avengers: Doomsday has changed significantly over the last few years. Marvel originally announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2022 as the final chapters of the Multiverse Saga. Jonathan Majors was set to return as Kang the Conqueror, with plans for Kang to serve as the saga’s main villain.

However, those plans changed following Majors’ legal issues and his departure from Marvel. The studio later decided to move in a different direction. In July 2024, Marvel officially announced the return of directors Anthony and Joe Russo, along with the surprise casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. At the same time, the film received its new title, Avengers: Doomsday.

The movie will feature a large cast made up of actors from across Marvel’s history, including characters from previous MCU projects and members of the X-Men franchise. The story will reportedly focus on heroes from different realities coming together as universes begin to collide.

According to the film’s official premise, the events take place fourteen months after Thunderbolts*. Heroes from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four’s universe, and the universe of the original X-Men will be forced to join forces to stop Doctor Doom and prevent a massive threat from spreading across reality.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18. The story will then continue in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to be released one year later in December 2027.

For now, Downey’s message is simple. The team knows the expectations are high, and they are working hard to create something that earns fans’ confidence all over again.
