Santa Monica Studio just dropped one of the most unexpected reveals in PlayStation history, and the internet is still processing it. ‘God of War Laufey’ is a brand-new entry in the long-running action series that shifts the spotlight away from Kratos and onto his late wife, Faye. The cast announcement that followed the reveal made things even more interesting.

‘God of War Laufey’s’ cast was officially confirmed by Sony and Santa Monica Studio alongside the game’s surprise reveal during the June PlayStation State of Play showcase. What came with it was a trio of performers that nobody saw coming, a combination of franchise legacy, Hollywood star power, and one very memorable cosmic cube.

Deborah Ann Woll Steps Into the Lead as Faye

The biggest casting announcement is the return of Deborah Ann Woll as Faye, also known as Laufey. Woll previously portrayed the character in flashbacks and key story moments in ‘God of War Ragnarök’, but this marks her first time leading a ‘God of War’ game as the primary playable character. It is a significant shift for a franchise built around Kratos, and the fandom has been quick to recognize what a bold swing this is.

Woll is perhaps best known for her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Karen Page, appearing in the original Netflix Daredevil series, various Punisher projects, ‘The Defenders’, and the acclaimed reboot ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. Her range as a performer has long been underutilized in major action-adventure properties, and being handed the lead in one of PlayStation’s most prestigious franchises feels like a long-overdue moment.

As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, Faye has deep roots as a warrior and has proven equal to even the likes of Thor, one of the strongest gods in the Nine Realms. Santa Monica Studio’s development team noted that one of their top priorities throughout development has been handcrafting a uniquely fresh feel for Faye’s gameplay that will also meet the high expectations fans have for the series.

The Story of Faye and the Everywhen

Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey, warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. To save the ones she loves, she must navigate a dangerous and unfamiliar realm.

The game follows her journey through a mysterious afterlife known as the Everywhen, where different mythologies appear to intersect. Sony describes the game as the next mainline entry in the franchise and a major exploration of one of the series’ most important yet least understood characters. Given how much of the previous games were built on mystery surrounding Faye, the prospect of finally seeing her story told from the inside is generating enormous excitement.

From a gameplay perspective, ‘God of War Laufey’ appears noticeably different from Kratos’ recent adventures. Faye is far more agile, capable of double jumps, rapid aerial movement, and juggling enemies with lengthy combo strings. Combat looks faster and more stylish overall, with some sequences resembling character action games such as ‘Devil May Cry’ more than the heavier, weightier combat of ‘God of War’ and ‘God of War Ragnarök’.

Santa Monica Studio revealed an in-depth gameplay showcase for ‘God of War Laufey’, showcasing Faye running into Sekhmet and Begtse, gods from the Egyptian and Tibetan Buddhism pantheons, respectively. The multi-mythological scope signals an entirely new chapter for the series.

Jack Quaid, the Cube, and the Character Nobody Expected to Love

Then there is Phranque. Voiced by ‘The Boys’ star Jack Quaid, the blue block of gelatinous matter seems like a kindly foil to giantess Laufey, who appears solemn as she navigates the violent Everywhen in a volcanic afterlife filled with gods struggling for power. The character was an immediate talking point the moment the gameplay footage ended.

Quaid is not just voicing the cube, he is performing the full motion-capture for it. Behind-the-scenes shots of the production show Quaid in full mocap gear, complete with a frame around his middle to represent his cubic form in-game. The ResetEra community immediately erupted with reactions, with one user noting that it is “insane they’re mocapping a cube” while others admitted the reveal had them “more excited than the trailer.”

“I hope by the end of this, everybody has feelings for some ribbons and a jellied cube,” said ‘God of War Laufey’ director Ariel Lawrence during an interview with IGN. Based on social media responses alone, that goal appears to already be well underway. Fans are noting that Phranque appears to be a nod to the Gelatinous Cube from ‘Dungeons and Dragons’, a classic enemy that has been beloved for years.

Perlina Lau Completes the Trio as Rue

Rue, played by Perlina Lau, is the enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping the devastatingly powerful sword in her care from falling into the wrong hands. Together with Faye and Phranque, she forms the unlikely core companion group at the heart of the adventure.

Perlina Lau is a producer and actress who has appeared in TV series including ‘Friday Night Bites’ and ‘Creamerie’. Her casting continues the trend of Santa Monica Studio reaching for performers with distinct presence rather than simply leaning on name recognition alone.

Together, the trio will embark on a journey deep into the Everywhen that will pit them against a cast of gods and creatures from across mythology, as well as beings native to the Everywhen itself. The combination of a legendary Norse warrior, a chipper cosmic cube, and a sword-guarding enchanted ribbon is the kind of ensemble that only this franchise could pull off with a straight face.

Fan Reactions and What This Means for the Franchise

The response to the full cast announcement has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. One fan on Bluesky wrote, “Me: hm, I don’t know if I need another God of War. Sony: we have a female protagonist and a gelatinous cube as a companion. Me: ok I’ll buy day 1.” That sentiment seems to represent the general mood across gaming communities following the reveal.

Kratos and Atreus were both spotted in the ‘God of War Laufey’ gameplay presentation, and they will presumably be played by Christopher Judge and Sunny Suljic again, though it remains unclear whether their appearances will strictly use old material or feature new recordings. That detail leaves the door open for some meaningful connective tissue to the events fans already know.

Santa Monica Studio’s Head of Creative Cory Barlog and ‘God of War Laufey’ Game Director Ariel Lawrence sat down for an extended interview discussing the reveal, how the idea of a Faye-centered game first came to be, and the long-term creative vision for the franchise. The creative investment is clearly deep, and the cast they have assembled reflects that ambition at every level.

Whether it is the long-awaited spotlight on one of the saga’s most compelling figures, Deborah Ann Woll’s career-defining lead performance, or a gelatinous cube named Phranque stealing the entire show before the game is even out, ‘God of War Laufey’ has announced itself in spectacular fashion. If you already have opinions on who the real breakout star of this reveal is, whether it is Faye, Rue, or everybody’s new favorite cube, drop them below and settle the debate once and for all.
