Before Hollywood Stardom, ‘Dune’ Star Anya Taylor-Joy Faced Years of Bullying Over Her Appearance
Anya Taylor-Joy has opened up about a difficult time in her childhood, sharing that she was bullied at school and often felt like she did not fit in. The actress spoke about her past during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, according to the show’s interview.
She said the experience affected her deeply and even led her to leave school at the age of 16. Despite that, she also made it clear that her parents played a huge role in helping her get through those years.
During the interview, Anya reflected on how her parents supported her when she was struggling with bullying over her looks. She said their way of guiding her helped her stay strong during a very hard period of her life.
She explained, “I was very, very lucky with my parents because when I was bullied for my looks my mom always said you look at the inside of somebody you don’t look at class, you don’t look at anything like that.”
She continued by talking about the message her mother always gave her, focusing on kindness and character rather than appearance or social status. She said that advice stayed with her and helped her deal with the painful comments she received as a child.
“You look at the inside of somebody you don’t look at what they do for a job, it’s just do you like that person’s heart?” she said. She also added that she is very grateful to her mother for teaching her this way of thinking.
Anya also shared that her school life was very difficult. She moved to London as a child after being raised in Argentina for her early years. She said the change was overwhelming because she did not speak English at first and felt like she did not belong anywhere. According to her past interviews, she often struggled to connect with other children and felt isolated.
She described feeling caught between cultures and not being accepted by other kids. In earlier comments shared in other interviews, she said she often felt like she did not fit in anywhere, which made school life even harder for her.
Because of these struggles, she eventually decided to leave school at 16. After that, she moved toward acting, which quickly became her focus. The decision was difficult for her family, but she felt it was the right path for her future.
She soon found work in the entertainment industry. One of her first major roles came in the film The Witch, which helped launch her acting career.
After that, she went on to appear in several well-known projects, including Peaky Blinders, Emma, and the hit series The Queen’s Gambit, which brought her global fame.
Despite her success today, Anya made it clear in the interview that her early years were not easy. She said school was a place where she often felt out of place and struggled emotionally. She also shared that acting became a way for her to find confidence and a place where she finally felt valued.
Her reflections offered a personal look at how she moved from a difficult childhood to becoming one of the most recognized actresses in film and television today.
