Jennifer Lawrence once spoke openly about an early career experience she now describes as “humiliating” and “degrading,” sharing new details about the pressure she faced in Hollywood before becoming an Oscar-winning star.

The comments come from her appearance at a Los Angeles event where she was honored as one of eight recipients.

Lawrence explained that when she was just starting out in the industry, she was pushed to change her body for a role. She said a group of producers told her she needed to lose a significant amount of weight in a very short time.

She recalled, “When I was much younger and starting out, I was told by producers of a film to lose 15 pounds in two weeks,” adding that another actress had already been removed from the project for not losing weight quickly enough. This detail, she said, made it clear how strict and unforgiving the expectations were at the time.

The situation, according to Lawrence, became even more uncomfortable during casting preparations. She described being placed in a nude line-up with other actresses. She said a female producer arranged for her and several other women to stand together with only small coverings while their bodies were compared side by side.

She said, “During this time a female producer had me do a nude line-up with about five women who were much, much thinner than me. We are stood side-by-side with only tape on covering our privates.”

After that moment, Lawrence said the experience took an even more painful turn. She claimed the same producer suggested she use the images from the line-up as motivation to lose weight, which she described as deeply humiliating.

She said, “After that degrading and humiliating line-up, the female producer told me I should use the naked photos of myself as inspiration for my diet.”

Lawrence also shared that she tried to push back against the demands at one point. However, she said the pressure from the industry made her feel like she had limited options early in her career. She described feeling trapped and unsure how to respond in a system where she believed her job depended on compliance.

She added that she has since learned to set boundaries, saying, “I’m still learning that I don’t have to smile when a man makes me uncomfortable. Every human being should have the power to be treated with respect because they’re human.”

The interview also touched on broader issues in the film industry, including the treatment of women and the pressure to meet physical standards. Lawrence said that although these experiences were painful, they also made her more aware of how widespread the problem is.

In a separate statement reported by People, she also addressed past allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein. She said she was disturbed by the reports and expressed support for the women who came forward. She clarified that she did not personally experience harassment from him during their work together, but emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable.

Lawrence’s comments add to ongoing conversations in Hollywood about workplace treatment, body image pressure, and the changes needed to protect actors starting out in the industry.
