The future of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is now uncertain, even though it initially looked like a guaranteed success story for Netflix. According to Forbes, the series may not be moving forward with a third season after its second season failed to meet expected viewing numbers, despite strong audience and critical reactions.

The show started off very strong. Its first season quickly climbed to the top of Netflix’s global charts after its release, becoming one of the platform’s most-watched titles at the time. However, the second season did not manage to keep that same momentum. It debuted in ninth place on Netflix’s rankings and only managed a small rise afterward, reaching just one position higher in the following days.

What makes the situation more surprising is that the quality of the series does not seem to be the problem. In fact, audience and critic reactions improved significantly between seasons.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the critic score rose from 83 percent to 90 percent. Even more striking, the audience score jumped from 68 percent to an impressive 95 percent, making it one of the highest-rated Netflix shows of the year in terms of viewer feedback.

The series also had several advantages going into its second season. The lead role is played by Emma Myers, who gained widespread popularity through Netflix’s hit show Wednesday. The story is also based on the bestselling book series by Holly Jackson, which provides enough material for multiple seasons. On top of that, the production is not considered overly expensive compared to many other streaming dramas, since it does not rely heavily on large-scale effects or major star salaries.

Despite all of this, viewership remains the deciding factor. According to Forbes, the second season’s performance has not matched the success of the first, and there are currently no signs of a strong rebound in audience numbers. This has raised concerns about whether Netflix will approve a third season.

Another important factor in the decision is how many viewers finish the season once they start it. This completion rate is not publicly available, but it is known to play a major role in Netflix’s internal decision-making process when it comes to renewals and cancellations.

The situation is even more complicated because A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is a co-production between Netflix and the BBC. This means that any decision about the show’s future is not controlled by Netflix alone. Both companies would need to agree on continuing the series, which adds another layer of uncertainty.

The story of the series follows Pip Fitz-Amobi, a high school student played by Emma Myers, who reopens a local murder case that happened five years earlier. A boy named Sal Singh was convicted of killing his girlfriend, but Pip begins to suspect that the truth may be more complicated than what was originally believed. As she investigates for a school project, she uncovers hidden secrets that many people in her town want to keep buried.

Some viewers and analysts have also pointed to the long gap between seasons as a possible reason for the drop in interest. Nearly two years passed between the first and second seasons, which may have caused some of the initial audience excitement to fade. With shorter seasons and an already established story, some believe the break may have been longer than necessary.

For now, the future of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder remains undecided. If viewing numbers do not improve soon, the series could be at risk of being discontinued, leaving fans waiting to see whether Netflix and the BBC decide to continue the story.
