Kane Parsons’ ‘Backrooms’ Poised to Shatter a 13-Year Box Office Record
Kane Parsons’ Backrooms is on the verge of making history for A24. According to box office figures reported by Deadline, the horror film is expected to become the studio’s highest-grossing movie ever worldwide, passing the current record holder, Marty Supreme.
The achievement would mark a major milestone for A24, which was founded in 2012. If Backrooms takes the top spot this weekend or by Monday, it will break a box office record that has stood for the entire 13-year history of the company.
The film has already had an impressive run since its release. Deadline reports that Backrooms is expected to finish Sunday with more than $185 million worldwide. That total puts it within reach of overtaking Marty Supreme, which earned $191.2 million globally during its theatrical run.
What makes the performance even more impressive is how quickly it happened. Backrooms is expected to become A24’s biggest movie in just 10 or 11 days in theaters. By comparison, Marty Supreme needed 53 days to become the studio’s highest-grossing film and take the record away from Everything Everywhere All at Once, which finished with $147.9 million worldwide.
The film continues to draw large audiences despite a significant drop in its second weekend. According to Deadline, Backrooms is expected to earn around $25.7 million in North America during its second frame, representing a decline of about 68% from its opening weekend. Industry analysts note that this is not unusual for movies based on popular online properties, as many fans rush to see them as soon as they are released.

Even with that drop, the movie’s domestic total is expected to reach $134.8 million by Sunday. Internationally, the film had already collected $50.3 million as of Friday, helping push its worldwide total closer to the all-time A24 record.
Deadline also reported that 81% of the film’s second-weekend audience was under the age of 35. That shows the movie is continuing to attract younger viewers, many of whom were already familiar with the Backrooms phenomenon before the film arrived in theaters.
The movie is based on the viral internet horror series created by Kane Parsons, who first gained attention online for his Backrooms videos. The feature film stars Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. It was produced by A24 alongside Chernin Entertainment, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, 21 Laps, and Phobos.
Another factor behind the film’s success is its relatively small budget. According to Deadline, Backrooms cost less than $10 million to make. Its marketing spending in North America was reportedly in the teen millions, making its box office performance even more remarkable.
The film’s success has also earned praise from some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Steven Spielberg recently commented on the strong box office performances of both Backrooms and Obsession, saying, “I just applaud them.”
With ticket sales still coming in, Backrooms is now only days away from becoming the biggest box office hit in A24 history. If current projections hold, Kane Parsons’ film will officially shatter a record that has stood since the company was founded 13 years ago.
