‘Obsession’ Just Broke a Major Box Office Record and No One Saw It Coming
The horror film Obsession is having a huge moment at the global box office. The information comes from industry reporting, which tracks film earnings and box office records.
The movie has now passed 200 million dollars worldwide. That makes it the biggest film ever released by Focus Features. It also remains the studio’s top performer in North America, where it has earned about 151 million dollars so far.
What makes this run even more unusual is how steady the film has been. In its fourth weekend, the movie only dropped around 7 percent in earnings, bringing in 25.6 million dollars. That kind of small drop is rare for horror films, which usually fall much faster after opening weekends.
Because of that strong hold, Obsession also set new records for the best fourth weekend performance ever for a horror film. It even passed the long-standing benchmark set by The Blair Witch Project, which had held the record for more than two decades.
Industry data also shows that the film is breaking patterns that are very unusual in modern box office history. It is the first movie since E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to actually grow in its second and third weekends instead of dropping. That kind of word-of-mouth growth is extremely rare today, especially for horror titles.
The success is even more surprising when looking at how the film started. It was picked up at the Toronto International Film Festival for around 15 million dollars. At that time, it was seen as a small genre purchase, not a major global hit.
The movie itself was made on a very small budget. Director Curry Barker shot it independently for about 750,000 dollars with a cast of mostly unknown actors. Before this, Barker was known for smaller online horror projects and YouTube-based work, not major studio releases.
Now, after the success of Obsession, Barker has quickly become one of the most talked-about new filmmakers in Hollywood. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he has already moved into larger studio projects and is being watched closely by major production companies.
He has already finished filming his next project, a movie called Anything But Ghosts. He is also attached to direct a new version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24, which shows how quickly his career is moving after this breakout hit.

Inside the industry, the film’s performance is being compared to other surprise hits that started small but grew through audience reactions. Focus Features, the studio behind it, has now found its biggest success ever with this film, surpassing other well-known titles in its history.
What stands out most is how audiences have reacted. Instead of fading quickly after release, the movie kept growing week after week. That kind of trend usually signals strong audience recommendations and repeat viewings.
For now, Obsession continues to climb the global charts, and its box office run is still not finished.
