David Harbour has finally spoken publicly about Lily Allen’s album West End Girl, and his reaction is careful, direct, and clearly guarded. Harbour addressed the record for the first time and also reflected on the attention surrounding their split.

Harbour said, “It was weird. I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that. I can’t really say that much more because it’s my private life. In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won’t speak about that. Stories are complex and that’s why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn’t my experience.”

His comments come as Allen’s album West End Girl continues to draw attention for its emotional tone and its lyrics about love, trust, and breakdowns in relationships. The record, released in October 2025, is her first in seven years and was widely interpreted by listeners as being shaped by her marriage to Harbour.

Allen spoke to British Vogue about the project and explained that it was written during a difficult period in her personal life. She said, “I made this record in December 2024 and it was a way for me to process what was happening in my life.”

She also added that while the songs reflect real experiences, they are not a strict retelling of events. “There are things that are on the record that I experienced within my marriage, but that’s not to say that it’s all gospel. It is inspired by what went on in the relationship.”

Allen and Harbour’s relationship began in 2019 after they met on the dating app Raya. They married in Las Vegas in 2020 and later lived together in New York. Their split was confirmed in early 2025, after four years of marriage.

Much of West End Girl focuses on emotional distance, insecurity, and the breakdown of trust. Songs on the album describe strained communication and feelings of betrayal, with lyrics that quickly sparked online debate about the real-life inspiration behind them.

Allen has not directly confirmed who each song is about, but she has said the album was born from a need to process her emotions during that time. In earlier interviews, she has described the writing process as a form of personal release rather than a strict factual account.

Harbour’s response stands out because he avoids engaging with specific claims or lyrics. Instead, he focuses on the idea of privacy and artistic expression, repeatedly stressing that he does not want to turn his personal life into public discussion.

He also made it clear that he respects Allen’s right to express her experience through music, even if he does not share her version of events. His line, “It wasn’t my experience,” is the closest he comes to directly addressing the content of the album.

Since their separation, both Harbour and Allen have kept most details of their private life out of public view. Allen has spoken more openly about emotional recovery and mental health, while Harbour has chosen a more reserved approach in interviews.

For now, Harbour’s comments suggest a firm boundary. He is willing to acknowledge the album, but not to debate its meaning or confirm its details. Instead, he frames it as art shaped by one perspective, while keeping his own story private.
