Sydney Sweeney Breaks Silence on Cassie’s Constant Criticism in ‘Euphoria’
Sydney Sweeney opens up about Cassie Howard’s journey in “Euphoria” and the way the character was constantly judged on screen and off screen, in a conversation with Variety.
She explains that Cassie’s story has now reached its end after the final season, but the impact of the role still feels very present for her. Cassie started as a quiet, insecure teenager and slowly went through major life changes in the show, including a rushed marriage to Nate, money problems at home, and even taking on adult work to survive. According to Variety, Sweeney says playing Cassie meant going through huge emotional swings and moments that often felt extreme and surreal.
One of the biggest things Sweeney talks about is how Cassie was always under pressure and constant scrutiny. She says that every part of Cassie’s life was judged by people around her, both inside the story and by viewers watching the show. That sense of being watched and criticized became part of the character’s identity.
Sweeney reflects on how that judgment affected the way Cassie was seen. She explains that Cassie was often treated like she was doing everything wrong, even when her actions came from confusion, insecurity, and lack of guidance. In her words, Cassie never really learned what healthy love or respect looked like, which shaped many of her decisions and mistakes.
She also points out that Cassie’s relationships, especially with Nate, were deeply complicated. Sweeney says Cassie did feel love in her own way, but she didn’t fully understand what real love should look like. That confusion made her cling to relationships that were unhealthy, even when they hurt her emotionally.
According to Variety, Sweeney also talks about how Cassie’s biggest struggle was not just her relationships, but how much she cared about how others saw her. That need for approval often pushed Cassie into situations where she lost control of her emotions and made choices based on fear and validation instead of self-worth.

Sweeney says that one of the hardest parts of playing Cassie was showing how public opinion can shape a person’s identity. Cassie was constantly reacting to how others saw her, and that pressure followed her in almost every storyline.
She also reflects on how people outside the show reacted to Cassie. Sweeney explains that the same kind of judgment Cassie experienced on screen often spilled into real life, where audiences and critics would mix the character with the actor herself.
Despite all of this, Sweeney says she still feels connected to Cassie and understands her deeply. She believes Cassie was written as someone who was always trying to be loved but kept misunderstanding how to get there.
By the end of the interview, Sweeney makes it clear that Cassie’s story is complete, but the conversations around her character are not. She feels that time may change how people interpret Cassie’s actions and the way she was judged throughout the series.
