Will There Be a ‘Disclosure Day 2’? Here’s What We Know so Far

Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day‘ has officially landed in theaters, and audiences are already buzzing. The sci-fi thriller hits cinemas on exactly the kind of scale that only Spielberg can command, and with early critical praise coming in strong, the conversation has quickly pivoted from “is this good?” to “when do we get more?”

The question of a sequel is a reasonable one. After all, ‘Disclosure Day’ feels less like a closing of a chapter and more like the opening of an entirely new world. But based on everything we currently know, the answer may not be the one fans are hoping for.

The Story Behind ‘Disclosure Day’ and Its Origins

‘Disclosure Day’ was first announced in April 2024, when Spielberg revealed his next feature would mark his return to the world of UFOs, reuniting him with screenwriter David Koepp. This is far from a casual project. The road to a final screenplay was no easy feat, with ‘Disclosure Day’ going through 42 different drafts before Spielberg was satisfied enough to begin principal photography.

The film is produced by Kristie Macosko Krieger for Amblin Entertainment, with the screenplay by David Koepp, whose prior collaborations with Spielberg on combined projects have earned more than $3 billion worldwide. That pedigree alone tells you just how much weight this production was carrying before a single frame was shot.

The All-Star Cast and the Secrecy That Surrounded It

The film boasts a cast led by Emily Blunt, who was circling the project as far back as June 2024, with Colin Firth confirmed in August of that same year. The rest of the ensemble, including Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell, came together throughout 2024.

First Box Office Numbers for ‘Disclosure Day’ Have Dropped

Josh O’Connor plays UFO whistleblower Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity administrator who finds himself on a mission to expose the existence of alien life.

Spielberg has been very explicit that the marketing for ‘Disclosure Day’ deliberately hid a major portion of the film, confirming at CinemaCon that no footage from the entire third act appears in any trailers or previews. That level of secrecy around a summer blockbuster is increasingly rare, and it has only fueled the post-release speculation about where the story could go next.

The Box Office Stakes and What They Mean for a Sequel

The film carries a reported $115 million production budget, plus roughly $80 million in marketing, putting its global breakeven point around $300 million. Because Spielberg’s audience tends to be older and doesn’t feel the urgency to see a movie on opening weekend, ‘Disclosure Day’ could continue to sell tickets through June and July.

Despite initial rumors, ‘Disclosure Day’ has zero connection to any of Spielberg’s previous alien films, and the director has been careful to present it as a self-contained original story, warning at CinemaCon that Hollywood will “run out of gas” if it only makes reboots and sequels.

Whether the film’s financial performance ultimately shifts that conversation remains to be seen, but the critical reception so far is encouraging. ‘Disclosure Day’ is certified “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, which gives Universal exactly the word-of-mouth engine it needs for a slow-burn box office performance.

Does the Ending Leave Room for ‘Disclosure Day 2’?

Here is where things get genuinely interesting, and where a sequel’s feasibility becomes murky. Screenwriter David Koepp confirmed that the story was always designed to end at the precise moment the world witnessed alien life with their own eyes. As Koepp put it, “If the movie was called ‘Disclosure Day and the Subsequent Week,’ then you know you got a lot of explaining to do. But our story was accomplished and it was time to end it.”

Critics and analysts have pointed to Spielberg’s track record with sequels as another strong indicator against a follow-up. Not only did he fight to stop an ‘E.T.’ sequel from ever being made, but he also declined to direct any ‘Jurassic Park’ sequels beyond the second film. At the time of writing, neither Spielberg nor the studio has officially announced plans for a sequel, and the absence of a post-credits scene reinforces the film’s standalone nature.

What Fans and Critics Are Saying About a Potential Follow-Up

The online reaction has been split between those who feel the story is perfectly complete and those who are desperate for more. Some viewers have noted that the film does leave a few unanswered questions, including how the world adapts to the disclosure at the center of the story and what the alien actually whispers to Daniel, which could serve as foundations for a second installment.

Spielberg himself has described ‘Disclosure Day’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ as bookends to the same type of story, with ‘Close Encounters’ being about the initial shock of potential contact and ‘Disclosure Day’ representing something further along in humanity’s relationship with that possibility.

That framing suggests Spielberg views the two films as a complete arc rather than the beginning of a new franchise. Rather than an entire franchise, the possibility remains that Spielberg may just have one more chapter of the story left to narrate, though nothing has been confirmed and the film’s design strongly suggests it was built to stand alone.

Whether or not a sequel ever materializes, ‘Disclosure Day’ has already reignited a conversation about original sci-fi filmmaking that Hollywood desperately needed. If you’ve seen the film, we want to know: do you think the world Spielberg built in ‘Disclosure Day’ deserves another chapter, or does Daniel Kellner’s story feel complete exactly as it is?
