Jane Austen’s most overlooked daughter has finally found her spotlight. ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ arrives as one of the most eagerly anticipated British period dramas in recent memory, offering a fresh and emotionally rich reimagining of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ through the eyes of Mary Bennet, the bookish middle sibling who has spent two centuries waiting in the wings. The series premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in March 2026, before making its American debut on BritBox in May 2026.

The ten-part period drama is a production of Bad Wolf for BBC One, with Sony Pictures Television holding global rights. It is based on the novel of the same name by Janice Hadlow, and the appetite for this kind of untold story has never felt more hungry. For fans of lush Regency storytelling with real character depth, this one demands attention.

The Breakthrough Lead: Ella Bruccoleri as Mary Bennet

Ella Bruccoleri, known to audiences from ‘Call the Midwife’ and ‘Bridgerton,’ leads the cast as Mary Bennet. It is her first time at the very top of a call sheet, and by all accounts she has stepped into the role with remarkable conviction. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bruccoleri described the series as more than a romance, saying, “I think it’s a love story between Mary and herself.”

The story follows Mary as she leaves her sisters’ shadows to find herself, embarking on a journey from Meryton to London and the Lake District, where her quest for independence leads to an unexpected love story in Regency-era England.

That arc gives Bruccoleri room to do something genuinely surprising with a character who has historically served as little more than comic relief in most adaptations.

Bruccoleri spoke warmly about Jane Austen’s writing, reflecting, “I think she has her finger on that pulse so skillfully, and does it in such a way there’s loads of levity in it, but it’s this dry wit that Jane Austen nails.” It is the kind of engagement with source material that suggests a performance worth watching.

A Star-Studded Supporting Cast

The ensemble surrounding Bruccoleri is nothing short of exceptional. Richard E. Grant, acclaimed for ‘Withnail and I’ and ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’, and Ruth Jones, beloved for ‘Gavin and Stacey’ and ‘Stella’, co-star as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. The pairing brings warmth and sharp comic instinct to two of Austen’s most iconic parental figures, and their presence instantly elevates the material.

The wider cast includes Indira Varma as Mrs. Gardiner, Richard Coyle as Mr. Gardiner, Dónal Finn as Mr. Hayward, Varada Sethu as Ann Baxter, Tanya Reynolds as Miss Caroline Bingley, and Poppy Gilbert as Elizabeth Bennet. Maddie Close, Molly Wright, and Grace Hogg-Robinson round out the Bennet sisters as Jane, Kitty, and Lydia, respectively.

In a delightful piece of casting continuity, TV Insider exclusively revealed that Lucy Briers, who played Mary Bennet in PBS’s celebrated 1995 adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, now plays Mary’s confidante, Mrs. Hill, in ‘The Other Bennet Sister’. It is the kind of knowing nod that rewards longtime Austen devotees.

The Creative Team: Writers, Directors, and Producers

The series is adapted by Sarah Quintrell, with additional writing by Maddie Dai, and is directed by Jennifer Sheridan and Asim Abbasi. Quintrell’s scripts have been years in the making, shaped by an intimate understanding of what makes Mary Bennet so compelling as a heroine rather than a punchline.

Quintrell has spoken about how watching her own children reach their teens reminded her how intense social hierarchies feel, and said that really informed how she approached Mary’s inner life.

The series is produced by John Pocock, with executive producers including Kate Crowther, Becca Kinder, and Jane Tranter for Bad Wolf, Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC, and Jess O’Riordan, Robert Schildhouse, and Stephen Nye for BritBox, alongside Sarah Quintrell and Janice Hadlow herself. The involvement of the original novelist as an executive producer gives the adaptation a rare kind of creative integrity.

Executive producer Jane Tranter has said that the team had been working behind the scenes on ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ for many years, and that Hadlow’s brilliantly observed characters had lived and grown in their imaginations throughout that time as Quintrell worked on the scripts. Tranter called the assembled group the ensemble cast of their dreams, a statement that feels entirely justified.

Bad Wolf, BritBox, and the Road to Screen

‘The Other Bennet Sister’ comes from Bad Wolf, the production company behind ‘Industry’ and ‘Doctor Who’. Bad Wolf has quietly become one of the most exciting forces in British television drama, and this project represents a meaningful expansion into beloved literary territory. The series filmed in Wales, and was brought to the screen as a co-production between the BBC and BritBox.

The first episode aired at 8pm on Sunday, March 15 on BBC One, with the second following immediately at 8.30pm, with remaining episodes airing in the same paired pattern over the following weeks. BritBox launched the series in the US on May 6, 2026, with the first three episodes available immediately and a weekly rollout continuing until June 24, 2026.

Bad Wolf founder Jane Tranter has also revealed that the company is now looking at other overlooked Jane Austen characters for future development, suggesting that ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ may be the beginning of something much larger in scope. Whether audiences and critics continue to respond the way early viewers have will determine exactly how far that ambition reaches.

With a cast this accomplished, a creative team this dedicated, and a heroine this long overdue her moment, the real question is which overlooked Austen character you most want to see get the same treatment next.
