‘Masters of the Universe’ Is Sinking Fast: A 79% Friday Drop Puts He-Man’s Box Office Rescue Mission on Life Support

The numbers are in, and they are not kind to He-Man. ‘Masters of the Universe’ brought in just $2.4 million on its second Friday, a brutal 79% drop compared to its first Friday, as the film’s theatrical legs continue to buckle at an alarming rate. The worldwide total has now crossed $65 million, but with a reported production budget of $170 million, crossing that milestone feels less like cause for celebration and more like a grim countdown.

The Travis Knight-directed live-action reboot opened domestically to $29.43 million, with an international debut of $24.65 million proving equally uninspiring, suggesting overseas audiences were not going to ride to the film’s rescue. The star-studded cast, featuring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, was not enough to generate the audience enthusiasm the film desperately needed.

Friday estimates have ‘Masters of the Universe’ dropping around 68% in its second weekend to a projected $9.4 million three-day haul, sliding to fifth place, a steeper fall than even the Mortal Kombat II decline that analysts had been using as a comparison point. That projected drop puts He-Man squarely in the company of notable recent flops, landing between ‘Mortal Kombat II’, which fell 65% in its second frame, and ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, which dropped around 70%.

One of the most damaging data points to emerge concerns the film’s international performance. The overseas total is essentially frozen at $25 million, which for a globally recognized brand is a genuine red flag, particularly compared to ‘Mortal Kombat II’, which pulled nearly double that number internationally on its way to a $128.6 million worldwide finish that was itself considered a bomb.

The demographic picture tells a similarly troubling story. Only 5% of viewers were under the age of 12 and only 6% were between the ages of 13 and 17, demographics that have been crucial to recent box office successes. Industry analyst Paul Gross noted that right now, the only fantasy heroes doing strong business are the biggest and most established superheroes, calling it a soft opening for an action adventure with franchise and series potential.

‘Masters of the Universe’ is no longer just having a bad opening. The numbers are now coming into focus for its full run, and they point to one of the most significant box office losses Hollywood has seen in years. With the theatrical breakeven point sitting at approximately 2.5 times the production budget, the film would need to reach roughly $425 million worldwide, a target that now looks utterly out of reach. He-Man may have the power, but the box office certainly does not.
