Curry Barker, the 26-year-old director behind the breakout horror hit Obsession, is speaking very directly about what he thinks audiences want right now. In a recent interview tied to Focus Features, he reflected on how fast his career has changed after the film’s huge box office success, but the most talked-about part of his comments was what he said about Gen Z viewers.

Barker said he believes younger audiences are losing patience with what he called low-effort, uninspired studio content. He did not hold back when describing how he sees the current state of mainstream filmmaking and what people his age are reacting to.

“I wish they understood that we’re tired of slop. We want good movies back. People are still hungry for movies that are original without some big IP, as long as the story is good.”

He explained that the success of Obsession, a low-budget original horror film that far exceeded box office expectations, proved to him that audiences are still willing to show up for something new if it feels fresh and well-made. For Barker, the reaction was not just about his film doing well, but about what it suggests about audience taste right now.

He pointed out that viewers are actively responding to originality and are quick to reject films that feel repetitive or overly manufactured. In his view, social media and word of mouth have made it harder for studios to rely on familiar formulas that do not offer anything new.

Barker’s rise has also been tied to a wider conversation in Hollywood about younger filmmakers and how they are breaking through without traditional industry backing. He started by making short films online before moving into features, and he believes that path has helped him understand what modern audiences actually respond to.

While he has now become one of the most in-demand young directors in Hollywood, Barker said his creative mindset has not changed. He still focuses on making ideas that feel original to him, even if others doubt them at first. He said that approach is what helped Obsession stand out in the first place.

The director’s comments come at a time when the industry is debating the balance between original storytelling and franchise-driven content. His blunt description of “slop” has already sparked conversation online, especially among younger viewers who feel similarly about the types of films being released.

Even as studios now compete for his next project, Barker says he is still thinking carefully about what comes next and wants to keep telling stories that feel bold and different.
