Kevin Feige Says You’ll Recognize Sadie Sink in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ If You’ve Watched ‘Stranger Things’
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has been building serious momentum as one of the most hotly anticipated Marvel releases in years, and a large part of that electricity comes from a mystery the studio has flatly refused to solve. The film brings back Tom Holland as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, with ‘Stranger Things’ actress Sadie Sink among the newly confirmed cast members. The film’s first trailer launched earlier this year and immediately sent fans into a frenzy of speculation, mostly centered on the still-unidentified role Sink is set to play.
The mystery surrounding Sink’s character has been one of the most closely guarded secrets in recent MCU history, with Marvel keeping the role entirely hidden since her casting was first announced. The studio took the secrecy to remarkable lengths during production, reportedly keeping Sink in a heavy puffer jacket on set so that photographers could not make out her costume from spy shots.
Even Sink herself has played along, deflecting a question about the role at the ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 premiere with a perfectly dry non-answer, simply declining to describe the character in even a single word.
Now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is adding a knowing wink to the conversation. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Feige was asked whether audiences would be able to place Sink once the film arrives, and he offered a playful but pointed response: “If you’ve seen Stranger Things, you’ll definitely recognize her… I know what you meant [laughs].” It is a small comment from a man who almost never gives anything away, and its very casualness is precisely what makes it land so heavily with a fanbase that has been dissecting every frame of promotional material for months.
Feige also used his Empire interview to frame the film as a genuine creative reset for the character, describing ‘Brand New Day’ as the first Spider-Man entry in the MCU to fully lean into the source material’s classic identity, with Peter Parker now operating as a street-level hero living alone and responding to ordinary crime rather than universe-threatening events.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton added that Peter responds to the emotional fallout of his situation by throwing himself entirely into his work as Spider-Man.
None of that grounded framing has slowed the speculation engine when it comes to Sink’s casting. Theories in circulation range from Gwen Stacy and a new version of Mary Jane Watson to Firestar, Shathra, Mayday Parker, and vigilante Punisher ally Rachel Cole-Alves.
The most persistent theory by far remains Jean Grey, a reading that gained fresh momentum when a reportedly leaked merchandise bag clip surfaced showing Sink’s character emanating pink energy from her hands and eyes, a detail fans immediately associated with the iconic X-Men telepath.
Insider buzz has continued to build in parallel, with scooper My Time To Shine Hello claiming that Sink’s character comes attached to a “major twist” and asserting, based on early test screening reactions, that she is the standout element of the entire film. Marvel and Sony have remained officially silent on the matter, with the Empire issue that sparked this latest round of discussion having hit newsstands on June 4.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and swings into cinemas on July 31. With Feige now personally teasing that Sink’s presence will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has followed her career, the reveal of who she is actually playing looks set to be the defining conversation of the summer. Whether you are firmly in the Jean Grey camp or holding out for something nobody has guessed yet, make your case in the comments.
