Amanda Seyfried has spoken about the difficult period she faced after sharing her opinion about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The actress revealed that the online reaction became so intense that she decided to hire a bodyguard for protection.

In a new interview with British GQ, Seyfried explained that the situation made her realize how quickly public discussions can become aggressive. She said she believes people should be able to share their opinions while still treating others with respect. According to the interview, she felt she only experienced a small part of the larger hostility that can happen online.

The controversy started in September 2025 after Kirk was killed. Following his death, Seyfried commented on an Instagram Reel that collected some of Kirk’s past statements and wrote, “He was hateful.” The comment led to strong reactions from Kirk’s supporters, with many criticizing the actress for her words.

After the backlash grew, Seyfried shared another statement on Instagram to explain her position. She said she could disagree with certain comments while also believing that violence was wrong. She wrote, “I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.”

Speaking to British GQ, Seyfried said she did not believe she had done anything wrong by expressing her thoughts. She explained that people should be able to have opinions without facing extreme reactions. She said, “A, I’m allowed to f**ing voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily. But there’s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down. And I experienced a very small fraction of that.”*

The actress also talked about wanting her children to feel comfortable sharing their own views in the future. She said she wants them to understand the importance of speaking honestly while avoiding harmful behavior. She added, “I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they’re not harmful.”

Seyfried described how strange it felt to suddenly need extra security. She said, “And then all of a sudden I find myself with a f**ing bodyguard at the airport and I’m like, ‘This is crazy.’”*

The Mamma Mia star had previously addressed the situation in a November 2025 interview with Who What Wear. At the time, she said she had no plans to apologize for her original comment. She explained that she believed her words were based on her own views and that she had the right to express them.

Seyfried also said she felt her original comment had been taken out of context. She told Who What Wear that she appreciated having the chance to explain herself and regain control of the conversation. She said, “Thank God for Instagram. I was able to give some clarity, and it was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualized – which is what people do, of course.”

Charlie Kirk, who was 31 years old, was killed on September 10, 2025, after being shot during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was the founder of Turning Point USA and was survived by his wife, Erika Kirk, and their two children.

The suspect in the case, Tyler Robinson, has been charged with aggravated murder and several other offenses. The case has continued to receive major public attention, with reactions and discussions spreading across political and entertainment circles.
