Amanda Seyfried became a household name after her role as Karen Smith in Mean Girls, but the sudden attention that came with success also brought new challenges. The actress recently opened up about her early years in Hollywood and revealed that there was a moment when she almost made a dangerous choice.

In a new interview with GQ, Seyfried looked back at what she described as a wild period of her life during her 20s. While she enjoyed the excitement that came with fame, she also admitted that she was aware of the risks that came with being young, famous, and surrounded by Hollywood’s party scene.

Seyfried explained that she was always afraid of becoming the subject of negative headlines. She watched other young stars deal with intense media attention and wanted to avoid a similar situation.

“The outsized bashing is ugly,” Seyfried told GQ. “It’s like a fear of mine. I would not want to be spotlit for being infamous in any way.”

One person she saw experience that pressure was her Mean Girls co-star Lindsay Lohan. While the two actresses took different paths after the movie became a major hit, Seyfried said she understood how easy it was for young actors to get caught up in the lifestyle surrounding fame.

That does not mean Seyfried avoided every wild moment. She admitted that her younger years included plenty of memorable experiences after moving to Los Angeles as a teenager.

“Did I go clubbing? Yeah,” she said. She also recalled one unusual night when she ended up at actor Val Kilmer’s house with Mean Girls co-stars Daniel Franzese and Jonathan Bennett after attending a screening of Reefer Madness.

“I was 18, and I had just moved to LA, and we had gone to a screening of Reefer Madness. I was at Val Kilmer’s house – I don’t even remember meeting him, but I was at his house,” Seyfried remembered.

However, the actress said there were moments when she decided not to go too far. One of those moments came when she had the chance to try cocaine for the first time at the famous Chateau Marmont hotel.

“My 20s were ridiculous,” Seyfried said. “I found myself in many places. I also remember there was a time I could have done cocaine for the first time at the Chateau [Marmont], and I didn’t because I was scared.”

She explained that fear helped her create limits for herself. Instead of fully embracing the party lifestyle around her, she tried to make sure she stayed in control.

“There was a limit to how much partying I was going to do, because I only wanted to be so drunk that I could [still] get myself home,” she said.

Seyfried has also previously spoken about living with obsessive-compulsive disorder and how it affected her choices. She believes her personality and the way she handled anxiety played a role in helping her avoid some of the problems that affected other young stars.

Today, Seyfried continues to have a successful career in film and television. From Mean Girls to projects like Mamma Mia!, The Dropout, and other major roles, she has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected actresses.

Looking back, Seyfried sees her younger years as a time full of unforgettable experiences, but she is also grateful that she made choices that allowed her to continue growing both personally and professionally.
