Netflix Shocks Fans by Canceling Hit Sci-Fi Series After Just One Season Despite Its 97% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Netflix has decided not to move forward with a second season of The Boroughs, ending the sci-fi series after only one season. The news comes shortly after the show’s debut in May 2026 and has surprised many fans who expected the series to continue.
According to Deadline, there had been discussions about renewing the show. Sources told the outlet that a writers room for Season 2 had already been opened, which is a common step for major productions. There were even early talks about filming a second and third season back-to-back. However, those plans changed after the show’s performance failed to meet Netflix’s expectations.
The Boroughs was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer. The series arrived shortly after the final season of Stranger Things, leading many viewers to compare the two projects. Because of its supernatural themes and mystery-driven story, some fans even described it as a version of Stranger Things featuring older characters.
The story takes place in a retirement community where a group of seniors discovers a strange and dangerous threat. Together, they must stop an otherworldly force that is trying to take away the one thing they have very little of left: time. The unique premise helped the show earn strong reviews from critics, with many praising its cast and fresh take on the sci-fi genre.
The series featured a star-studded lineup that included Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg. Ben Taylor directed several episodes, including the pilot.
While critics responded positively to the series, audience numbers told a different story. According to information reported by Deadline, The Boroughs attracted 5.6 million views during its opening weekend. The following week, viewership increased to 9.5 million views, suggesting that the show was gaining attention. However, the momentum did not last long. In its third week, viewership dropped sharply to 3.7 million views.

The decline raised concerns about the show’s ability to build a larger audience over time. Since Netflix often weighs viewership against production costs when making renewal decisions, the numbers may have played a major role in the cancellation.
The Boroughs was also an expensive project. The show relied on visual effects and featured a large cast of well-known actors, which increased production costs. As a result, Netflix likely expected stronger viewership to justify future seasons.
Another factor may have been timing. The series launched soon after the emotional conclusion of Stranger Things, one of Netflix’s biggest hits. According to Deadline, audience fatigue could have played a role, especially since The Boroughs was the second supernatural series produced by the Duffer Brothers to premiere this year.
With the cancellation now official, The Boroughs joins a growing list of Netflix shows that ended after one season. Despite receiving strong reviews and generating early interest, the sci-fi drama will not continue beyond its first chapter.
