Robert Downey Jr. Says’ Avengers: Doomsday’ Finally Solves Marvel’s Biggest Post-Endgame Problem
Robert Downey Jr. is keeping most details about Avengers: Doomsday under wraps, but he is confident that Marvel fans will be happy with what the movie delivers. The actor recently spoke with CBR alongside director Joe Russo and shared his thoughts on the upcoming film, which marks his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a completely different role.
After spending more than a decade playing Iron Man, Downey is now stepping into the role of Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s most famous villains. While he could not reveal major story details, he suggested that the movie has found a way to solve one of the biggest challenges facing Marvel after the massive success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Speaking about the project, Downey said, “And it’s not even about how I executed it. It’s about the way it’s been structured, and the other characters. There’s something going on in ‘Doomsday’ and forward that is literally the only antidote to: How do you not have these films be let down after an ‘Infinity War’ and an ‘Endgame?’ And boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down.”
Although Downey did not explain exactly what that “antidote” is, his comments suggest that Marvel has been working hard to create a story that can meet the high expectations left behind by its biggest movies.
Joe Russo also shared his excitement for the film during the interview. According to the director, Avengers: Doomsday will offer something different from previous Marvel movies. Russo said the movie contains many surprises and takes a deeper emotional approach than fans may expect.
He explained, “There are a lot of surprises. I think [‘Doomsday’] is the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.”
Marvel has faced a mixed reception since Endgame was released in 2019. While some projects became major hits, others struggled to connect with audiences. Movies such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine performed well and generated strong excitement among fans. At the same time, films like The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania received a less enthusiastic response.
That uneven run has led many fans to wonder whether Marvel can reach the same heights it achieved during the Infinity Saga. Downey believes the team behind Doomsday understands those concerns and has put significant effort into creating something worthy of audience expectations.
During the conversation with CBR, he also expressed appreciation for the chance to return to the Marvel universe. Downey said, “There’s an incredible amount of gratitude we have going into these two. One epic at a time. ‘Doomsday’… just the gratitude to be able to do it. To still be engaging with people who are critical when we fall short, but who understand how difficult it is when we get it right.”
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18. As Marvel prepares for another major chapter, fans will soon find out whether the studio has truly found a way to recapture the excitement that made Infinity War and Endgame such huge events.
