Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is Already a Box Office Giant With Record-Breaking Ticket Sales
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is still weeks away from hitting theaters, but the highly anticipated epic is already making a major impact at the box office.
The upcoming fantasy action film has reportedly earned around $3.5 million in domestic preview ticket sales, showing huge early interest from moviegoers. According to reports from Movie Mint, the early demand has pushed opening weekend predictions higher, with current estimates suggesting the film could debut between $70 million and $90 million in North America.
The excitement is not limited to the United States. In the United Kingdom, The Odyssey made history at London’s famous BFI IMAX. The theater reportedly sold 28,000 tickets in just 24 hours, bringing in around $1 million and breaking the venue’s previous record.
The previous BFI IMAX record was held by Dune: Part Two, which earned around half of that amount during its first day of sales. The impressive numbers show that audiences are eager to experience Nolan’s latest project on the biggest possible screen.
The Odyssey is expected to become one of the biggest movie events of 2026. Directed and written by Christopher Nolan, the film adapts Homer’s legendary Greek epic and follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he faces a dangerous journey home after the Trojan War.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, who must survive mythical threats and impossible challenges while trying to return to his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and his son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland.
The movie features an impressive cast that also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Nolan is producing the project alongside his wife Emma Thomas through their production company, Syncopy.
Known for creating massive cinematic experiences, Nolan is taking an ambitious approach with The Odyssey. The filmmaker reportedly shot the entire movie using IMAX 70 mm film cameras, making it the first project of his career to use the format from beginning to end.
The production reportedly had a budget of around $250 million, making it one of the most expensive films Nolan has ever made. The director has focused on practical filmmaking, real locations, and large-scale visuals to bring the ancient story to life.
The film’s journey to theaters has already been unusual. Opening weekend IMAX 70 mm tickets were released a full year before the movie’s release, and many screenings sold out quickly. Several ticket websites reportedly experienced heavy traffic as fans rushed to secure seats.
Industry analysts have taken notice of the early demand. Variety has suggested that The Odyssey could become one of the biggest films of 2026, while other analysts believe it has the potential to become Nolan’s biggest box office success.
The movie will face a major challenge because of its reported R rating and massive budget, but early ticket sales suggest audiences are ready for another large-scale Nolan experience.
