Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey is already proving that audiences are ready for a major cinematic event. Before the film has even reached theaters, fans have rushed to buy tickets, creating a record-breaking moment at one of the world’s most famous IMAX locations.

According to early ticket sale reports, London’s BFI IMAX sold around 28,000 tickets within the first 24 hours of availability. The huge response reportedly brought in close to $1 million in ticket sales, setting a new record for the theater.

The previous 24-hour sales record at BFI IMAX belonged to Dune: Part Two, which earned around $490,000 during the same period. The massive difference shows just how much excitement is already surrounding Nolan’s latest project.

The Odyssey is expected to be one of the biggest movie events of 2026. The film arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026, and marks Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic.

The story follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, played by Matt Damon, as he faces a dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters mythical creatures, powerful gods, and deadly challenges while trying to return to his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and his son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland.

While the story comes from ancient mythology, Nolan is approaching it in his own unique style. The filmmaker is known for creating large-scale movies with practical effects and massive visuals, and The Odyssey appears to continue that tradition.

The film reportedly carries a budget of around $250 million and was shot using new IMAX technology. Nolan has focused heavily on creating a real theatrical experience, with large locations and practical filmmaking techniques designed for the biggest screens possible.

The movie also features one of Nolan’s most impressive casts yet. Alongside Damon, Hathaway, and Holland, the lineup includes Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and many other major stars.

Behind the scenes, the cast has spoken highly about working with Nolan and each other. Tom Holland recently discussed the experience of joining such a major production, saying he feels a strong responsibility while working alongside actors he admired growing up.

Holland also praised the atmosphere on set, describing it as a place where everyone is focused on making something special.

Anne Hathaway shared similar feelings about working with Holland, praising his talent and professionalism. She described him as someone who brings both creativity and a strong understanding of the business side of filmmaking.

“He is really one-of-one. His ability to be an artist through and through, as well as a legit and successful businessman who sees the whole field and keeps both in appropriate conversation with each other at the level he does? Extremely rare.”

The early ticket sales suggest that audiences are not just interested in another blockbuster — they are excited for a true big-screen experience. Nolan has built a reputation for turning original ideas into major theatrical events, and The Odyssey appears to be following the same path.

With its record-breaking early demand, huge cast, massive budget, and Nolan’s reputation for creating unforgettable movies, The Odyssey is already shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of 2026.
