‘Sugar’ Season 2 Rotten Tomatoes Score Drops — See What Critics Are Saying
Apple TV+’s Sugar has returned for its second season, and early reviews suggest the neo-noir mystery is still strong, even if not perfect.
According to critics and review aggregators, the new season currently holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on early reviews, though the number of total reviews remains small.
The series, created by Mark Protosevich and starring Colin Farrell, follows private investigator John Sugar, a detective working in Los Angeles who also hides a major secret: he is an alien. Sugar loves old Hollywood films, wears sharp suits at all times, and has a strange but gentle connection with humans, especially dogs. His search for a missing woman in season 1 also tied into a deeper personal mission involving his own missing sister from his home planet.
Season 2 continues directly from those story threads. John Sugar stays in Los Angeles and takes on a new case involving a missing brother tied to the city’s criminal underworld. At the same time, he keeps searching for answers about his sister and dealing with isolation after other aliens left Earth. His attempts to contact his species continue to fail, leaving him stuck between two worlds.
Critics say this season expands the story in a bigger and more emotional direction. M.N. Miller of FandomWire called it “smoky sci-fi noir [that] deepens its mystery, expands its mythology, and keeps its cool cinematic soul.” Jared Mobarak of Hey, Have You Seen …? wrote that the shift in focus makes the story stronger, saying it works better when Sugar tries to balance his hidden identity with his detective work instead of hiding it completely.

Not all reviews are fully positive. Nate Richard of Collider gave the season a 6/10, saying “It’s watchable, but it isn’t as confident as Sugar’s bold premise demands.” Some critics feel the show’s style is still stronger than its storytelling, even though the visual direction and tone remain consistent.
Other reviewers are more mixed but still supportive. Greg MacArthur of Screen Rant praised the series’ look and cast, saying it builds on the first season’s ideas with a more polished feel. Giovanni Lago of Next Best Picture also noted that while it may not be top-tier television, it still holds interest thanks to its performances and atmosphere. Jeanine T. Abraham highlighted Colin Farrell’s performance, saying, “You immediately love this man. His level of empathy is unparalleled.”
The show continues to blend crime drama with science fiction and classic noir style, keeping its focus on mood, mystery, and character rather than action-heavy storytelling.
Season 2 of Sugar premiered on June 19 on Apple TV+, following the first season’s release in 2024 and its renewal later that year.
