‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ Shocks Fans With Major Character Death in Unprecedented Finale Twist
Disney’s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place ended its final season with a major surprise that changed the future of one of the franchise’s most important relationships. In a move rarely seen in Disney Channel shows, the series revealed that Mason Greyback, Alex Russo’s longtime love interest, had already died before the events of the sequel series.
The twist came during the final episodes of the show’s third and last season. According to Entertainment Weekly, the story initially appears to be setting up a happy reunion between Alex Russo, played by Selena Gomez, and Mason, played by Gregg Sulkin. Alex believes Mason has returned because he is finally ready to propose, but the emotional moment quickly takes a different direction.
When Mason appears at Alex’s door, she is excited and assumes he is there to ask her to marry him. However, Mason explains that something is wrong and that their reunion is not happening the way she thinks.
“I can’t propose to you. And you know why. Think about it. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. Why can’t I propose to you?” Mason asks. Alex slowly realizes the truth and responds, “Because you’re dead.”
The reveal sends Alex into confusion as she begins questioning what happened to her and where she is. Mason explains that when she entered a magical portal, she ended up somewhere between life and death. He tells her that he came back because he needs to help her return to the life she is supposed to have.
“When you went through the rift, you ended up somewhere in between. And I came here to help you get back,” Mason explains. “You have a whole other life, Alex. You got married. You have a beautiful daughter. And she needs you. That’s the life that you’re meant to live. You have to go back.”
The emotional goodbye between the two characters gives fans closure on their relationship. Alex thanks Mason for returning to help her, and he leaves her with one final message. “I’ll always love you, Alex Russo. And I’ll always be watching over you,” Mason tells her.
The decision to kill off Mason is especially surprising because Disney Channel shows have traditionally avoided permanently removing major legacy characters. Mason was introduced during the original Wizards of Waverly Place series and became one of Alex’s most popular relationships, making the reveal a major moment for longtime fans.
The final season also continued the storyline involving Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, who was revealed to be Alex’s daughter. Her existence had been hidden through magic to protect her from Lord Morsus, a powerful enemy connected to her family.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the finale eventually brings the Russo family story to a close. Alex and Justin reunite, Billie finds her father, and the family faces Morsus together. While Alex’s fate appears uncertain during the battle, the show later reveals that she survives and the family is reunited.
The ending gives the franchise an emotional farewell while also taking a major risk by changing the status of a beloved character. Mason’s death marks one of the darkest and most unexpected moments in Wizards history, proving that even a magical family comedy can deliver a serious emotional twist.
