Why Hulu Still Hasn’t Greenlit Ryan Coogler’s The ‘X-Files’ Reboot, According to Its Star
Ryan Coogler’s upcoming The X-Files reboot is moving forward, but fans should not expect a full season order just yet. One of the stars of the new series has explained why Hulu is taking its time before making the final decision.
Himesh Patel, who will lead the reboot alongside Danielle Deadwyler, recently discussed the project during an interview with Virgin Radio UK. According to Patel, Hulu is being careful with the show because The X-Files is a franchise that already has a huge and loyal fanbase.
Unlike many modern streaming projects that receive straight-to-series orders, Hulu has chosen a more traditional approach by ordering a pilot episode first. This allows the studio to see how the show comes together before committing to a full season.
Patel explained that the team does not want to rush the process and wants to make sure the new version respects what came before it. “Fingers crossed it will go on the right journey…I think it’s just not wanting…to rush it, especially when it’s a property like The X-Files that is so precious to people.”
The actor also shared his hopes that the reboot could continue for many years if the story is strong enough. “It would be great if the reboot ran for many years if you’ve got the story to tell.”
The decision to start with a pilot gives the creative team a chance to make changes early. It also helps Hulu understand what works before spending money on an entire season. This approach has become less common in the streaming era, but Hulu has brought back the pilot model for some projects.
The pressure surrounding The X-Files reboot is understandable. The original series, created by Chris Carter, became one of the most popular science fiction shows in television history. It originally starred David Duchovny as FBI agent Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully as they investigated strange cases involving aliens, paranormal events, and unexplained mysteries.
The new version will tell a similar type of story but will introduce a new group of characters. Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler are set to take over the lead roles, while the pilot will also feature actors including Steve Buscemi, Amy Madigan, Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal, Lochlyn Munro, Sofia Grace Clifton, and Joel Montgrand.
Ryan Coogler, known for directing films such as Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Sinners, is writing and directing the pilot. Jennifer Yale is attached as showrunner, while original X-Files creator Chris Carter will serve as an executive producer.
Patel’s comments suggest that the team understands the expectations surrounding the franchise. Instead of quickly releasing a new series, Hulu and the creators want to make sure they deliver something that fans will accept.
Patel is already known for roles in projects like Station Eleven, Yesterday, Tenet, Don’t Look Up, and The Franchise. He will also appear in upcoming films including Enola Holmes 3 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
For now, The X-Files reboot remains in the early stages, and Hulu’s final decision will depend on how the pilot comes together. However, with Coogler leading the project and the team taking extra care, fans still have plenty of reasons to be interested in what comes next.
