Ghostbusters is heading back to animation, and fans now have their first official look at the franchise’s next chapter. Netflix recently revealed new artwork from Ghostbusters: Night Shift, an upcoming animated series that is set to premiere in 2027. Along with the images, the streamer also shared new story details that give fans a better idea of what to expect from the show.

According to information released by Netflix through its official animation social media accounts, Ghostbusters: Night Shift will take viewers back to New York City in 1994. The series takes place five years after the events of Ghostbusters II, making it a direct continuation of the original movie timeline.

The first-look images include both concept art and an early still from the series. While the show is still in development, the artwork already gives fans a glimpse of the style and atmosphere Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are aiming for.

The official synopsis reveals that a new supernatural threat is spreading across New York. This time, however, it won’t be the classic Ghostbusters team stepping in to save the city. Instead, the story follows a group of young and inexperienced New Yorkers who find themselves dealing with a ghostly crisis.

Netflix describes the story by saying, “New York City, 1994 — Five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk, a new wave of supernatural terror hits the Big Apple, forcing a group of scrappy, young New Yorkers — untrained, underappreciated and kinda sorta responsible for the problem — to put on proton packs, face their fears and bust some ghosts.”

The setup gives the franchise a fresh direction while still staying connected to the original films. Rather than focusing on veteran ghost hunters, the series will introduce a younger team that must learn how to handle paranormal dangers on the fly.

The new show will also include some familiar connections to the larger Ghostbusters universe. One of those links is Walter Peck, the former Environmental Protection Agency official who became one of the franchise’s most memorable antagonists in the original movie. The character is reportedly involved in a mayoral campaign during the events of the series.

Another interesting addition is a new companion creature. Instead of Slimer, the team will have a small “terror-puppy” as a mascot. The creature is described as a miniature and much cuter version of the terrifying Terror Dogs that appeared in the original Ghostbusters film.

Behind the scenes, the project has several major names attached. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are serving as executive producers, continuing their involvement with the modern Ghostbusters franchise. Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan are leading the series as showrunners, while Amie Karp and Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd are also part of the producing team.

The project marks the franchise’s first animated series since Extreme Ghostbusters premiered in 1997. For many longtime fans, that alone makes Night Shift one of the most anticipated Ghostbusters projects in years.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have already found success working together on major animated productions, and expectations are high for this latest collaboration. While there is still a wait before the series arrives, the first images and story details suggest that Ghostbusters: Night Shift is aiming to introduce a new generation of heroes while honoring the legacy that made the franchise a global favorite.

With ghosts returning to New York and a brand-new team preparing to suit up, the next era of Ghostbusters is officially on the way.
