The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 ended with one of the series’ most emotional moments yet, leaving fans shocked after a major character’s fate changed the future of the team forever. Now, members of Critical Role are opening up about the heartbreaking decision and explaining why the loss will have a huge impact moving into season 5.

The shocking moment came during the season 4 finale, titled “The Ascension,” as Vox Machina faced off against The Whispered One. After a dangerous battle, the group believed they had defeated their powerful enemy, but the victory quickly turned into a nightmare.

The Whispered One returned stronger than before and demanded that Vox Machina accept his rule. While most of the team had no choice but to surrender in order to protect the world, Liam O’Brien’s Vax refused to kneel. As punishment, The Whispered One destroyed Vax in front of his friends, leaving the entire group devastated.

Before this moment, the season had already teased Vax’s possible fate. Earlier episodes showed Grog suffering a brutal attack after being thrown into the dangerous realm of Thar Amphala. Although he survived after being restored by The Whispered One, the situation created a major conflict for Pike, who was tempted into helping the villain.

The finale’s emotional ending was not a random decision. In an interview with ScreenRant, Liam O’Brien and Laura Bailey discussed how Vax’s death was something Critical Role had planned for a long time. O’Brien explained that the team looked at the biggest moments from the original campaign when developing the animated series.

According to O’Brien, Vax’s death became one of those important story points that had to happen because it represented a major turning point for the characters. He described it as “one of those things that was a pole in the sand” because the team knew it would lead the story into a darker and more emotional final chapter.

Laura Bailey also admitted that the moment was difficult for everyone involved. While speaking about the future of the show, she said the loss was painful but could make the next season even more meaningful.

“Yeah, it’s devastating, but I think it’s gonna be extra special for season 5. I feel like it was very sad. There may or may not have been a lot of tears happening.”

O’Brien added that the cast wanted to capture the same emotions fans experienced during the original Critical Role campaign. He explained that they wanted viewers to feel the same sense of love, sadness, and heartbreak that surrounded Vax’s original story.

The change from the tabletop campaign to the animated series also made Vax’s death feel different. In the original story, Vax’s fate was connected to other major events, including Vex’s own near-death experience. The show changed some details while keeping the emotional importance of the moment.

Now, season 5 will have to explore how Vox Machina moves forward without Vax. His sister Vex will likely struggle with losing her brother, while Keyleth will also have to deal with losing someone extremely important to her.

However, Vax’s connection to the Matron of Ravens could offer the team a possible path forward. Since the character became her champion, there may still be a chance for Vox Machina to find a way to bring him back.

With The Whispered One still threatening the world and the team facing their biggest emotional challenge yet, season 5 looks set to be one of the most important chapters in The Legend of Vox Machina’s story.
