Prime Video’s ‘RoboCop’ Reboot Reportedly Reveals First Plot Details and Filming Date
RoboCop is getting another chance to return to the big screen and television, with Prime Video developing a new series based on the classic sci-fi franchise. While details have been limited for a long time, new reports suggest the project is finally moving forward with a possible filming date and the first details about its story.
According to a report from World of Reel, the RoboCop reboot series is expected to begin a six-month production in Vancouver starting next January. The report also claims that director James Wan, known for his work in the horror genre, could direct several episodes of the upcoming show. Wan is already attached to the project as an executive producer.
The new series is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios and will reimagine the world first introduced in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 RoboCop movie. The original film became a sci-fi classic thanks to its mix of action, dark humor and social commentary.
Rebooting RoboCop is not an easy task. Previous attempts to bring back Verhoeven’s work, including the 2012 version of Total Recall and the 2014 RoboCop movie, received mixed reactions from audiences and struggled to match the impact of the original films.
Prime Video is now hoping to create a different version of the franchise by taking the story in a new direction. Instead of simply repeating the story of Alex Murphy, the new series will reportedly introduce a new character named Marc Kyle.
Based on details shared by World of Reel, Kyle will have a different background from the original RoboCop. Rather than starting as a police officer, he will reportedly be a soldier who dies during war. After his death, he is transformed into a cybernetic law enforcement officer.
The biggest connection to the original story is that Alex Murphy may still exist in this new version. Reports suggest Kyle could eventually work under Murphy’s guidance, creating a link between the classic character and the new lead.
It remains unclear whether Peter Weller, who played Alex Murphy in the original RoboCop films, will return for the series. Having Weller involved could help connect longtime fans with the new version, but no official casting announcement has been made.
The series has brought in Peter Ocko as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Ocko is known for creating and working on television projects such as Lodge 49.

The RoboCop reboot was first announced in 2023, but updates about the project have been quiet until now. The news comes after Prime Video decided not to continue with plans for another classic sci-fi revival, Stargate, and instead moved forward with the RoboCop franchise.
The upcoming series is expected to bring a fresh take on the character while keeping connections to the original movies. With James Wan involved and a new story planned, Prime Video appears to be aiming for a version of RoboCop that can appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
No official release date has been announced yet, but if the reported production timeline is correct, more details could arrive once filming begins.
