Millie Bobby Brown is opening up about the emotional impact of saying goodbye to Stranger Things, revealing that she struggled after the show ended and reached out to her co-stars to make sure their friendships stayed strong.

During a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast at 92NY, host Josh Horowitz spoke with Brown about life after the Netflix series and, of course, the biggest question fans still have: what really happened to Eleven?

The actress explained that she knows Eleven’s true fate but is not allowed to share the answer. According to Brown, the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, contacted her after the finale aired and reminded her to keep the secret.

“They were like, ‘Do not tell anyone. Because we made it a secret kind of pledge,'” Brown said during the conversation. “No one else knows. It’s just us three. And what we do with that information, it’ll be up to them.”

The mystery has caused plenty of debate among fans, with many refusing to believe Eleven is gone. Brown said she watched the online reactions with her husband, Jake Bongiovi, and noticed that even her own castmates had different opinions about what happened.

“Jake was like, ‘Ooh, these are really split.’ And the whole cast thinks I’m dead,” Brown joked. “One, rude. It’s so rude of them. There’s something to it, surely. You guys are projecting!”

Not everyone from the cast believes Eleven survived. David Harbour, who played Jim Hopper, previously told Variety that he felt Eleven’s ending was clear. He explained that a child with supernatural powers living openly in Hawkins would never make sense for the story.

“A lot of people think maybe she’s in Spain or whatever,” Harbour said. “But right from the very beginning of that series — we love this little girl, but you really can’t have a little girl in Hawkins, Indiana, with supernatural powers running around. She just cannot exist.”

Sadie Sink also shared her opinion during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She suggested that Mike Wheeler’s ending was more about accepting that childhood was over.

“Mike’s story is just one last story, and then they say goodbye to childhood,” Sink said.

However, Noah Schnapp appears to have a different view. During a fan event, he asked the crowd if they thought Eleven was dead. When fans reacted, he shook his head and confidently said, “No, she’s alive.”

The audience at Brown’s podcast appearance seemed to agree with that hopeful idea. When Horowitz asked fans who believed Eleven survived, around 80 to 90 percent raised their hands.

“We have a hopeful audience,” Brown said. “I love that!” Away from the Eleven mystery, Brown also spoke about how difficult it was to leave Stranger Things behind. She admitted that she experienced a tough emotional period after the show ended.

“I went into a little bit of a slight, slight depression,” she revealed. “It was very hard for me. I would not have expected that coming off of the show. I’m a very happy-go-lucky person.”

Brown said she spent January reconnecting with her Stranger Things co-stars because she wanted to fix any unresolved issues and make sure their relationships continued.

“They probably thought I was crazy,” she said. “I was like, ‘We’re still friends, right? Like, you’re not gonna stop talking to me anymore?’ I was like, ‘I’m sorry if I ever upset you,’ and was just trying to mend anything.”

For Brown, the cast became more than just co-workers. She started the series at age 10 and grew up alongside the people she worked with every day.

“I started the show when I was 10, and this character was me, and these people were in my life more than my own family,” she explained.

She added that saying goodbye to Eleven was one of the hardest moments of her life. “Saying goodbye to that after 10 years was a very, very emotional thing, and I’m going to miss Eleven more than anything.”

While Stranger Things may be over, Brown hinted that she and Harbour could return together in another Netflix project. She described the plans as already moving forward and teased, “Father-daughter is where we live, but Netflix will always be our home.”

She later added that the David Harbour project is happening sooner than expected, saying, “And it’s David’s idea, so kudos to him.”
