Toy Story 5 is expected to stay on top of the box office this weekend, even with two major new releases arriving in theaters. According to early projections, neither Supergirl nor Jackass: Best and Last is expected to challenge Pixar’s latest animated sequel for the No. 1 spot.

Box office estimates suggest Toy Story 5 could bring in between $80 million and $90 million during its second weekend in North America. The film has already had a huge start, earning $176 million domestically and reaching $328 million worldwide just days after release.

The strong performance continues a successful period for animated sequels. Recent follow-ups like Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2 have become some of the biggest movies of their years, showing that audiences continue to return for familiar animated worlds.

Supergirl will be the biggest new competitor entering theaters, with projections placing its opening weekend between $47 million and $50 million from around 3,600 locations. The DC superhero film is the next major release from the new Warner Bros. DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The movie follows Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock. The story sees Kara traveling through space with Krypto the Superdog before becoming involved in a mission with an alien girl named Ruthye. Together, they set out on a journey involving revenge and justice.

Craig Gillespie, known for films such as I, Tonya and Cruella, directed Supergirl from a script by Ana Nogueira. The film carries a reported production budget of around $170 million, meaning it will need strong audience support to become a major financial success.

Supergirl follows last year’s Superman, which helped launch the new DC Universe. That film opened with $125 million and finished with $618 million worldwide. However, Supergirl faces a different challenge since the character is not as widely recognized by general audiences as Superman.

Also arriving this weekend is Jackass: Best and Last, the latest entry in the long-running comedy franchise. The film is expected to open with around $10 million to $12 million from 2,800 theaters.

Starring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man and the rest of the Jackass crew, the movie is being promoted as the final chapter of the series. The franchise has built a loyal fan base over the years with dangerous stunts, extreme challenges and outrageous comedy.

The new film is expected to have a smaller opening than previous entries. Jackass Forever, released in 2022, debuted with $23 million and went on to make around $80 million worldwide. However, Jackass: Best and Last had a much lower production cost of about $10 million, meaning it does not need a massive box office run to make a profit.

The summer movie season has been especially strong, with Hollywood seeing one of its best periods since before the pandemic. According to Rentrak, current summer revenues are only slightly below 2019 levels, helped by successful original movies and major franchise releases.

With more big films still arriving, including new installments in popular series, the box office is expected to remain busy. For now, Toy Story 5 appears ready to continue its winning run and remain the movie audiences are choosing most this weekend.
