Christopher Nolan has shared new details about one of the biggest action sequences in his upcoming film The Odyssey, and it sounds like audiences are in for a brutal and intense experience when the movie arrives in theaters next year.

According to Empire, Nolan recently spoke about the film’s Laestrygonian battle, a major sequence inspired by Homer’s classic epic poem. The scene follows Odysseus and his crew as they face the terrifying Laestrygonians, a race of giant warriors who become one of the deadliest obstacles on his long journey home.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and marks Nolan’s return to large-scale action filmmaking after the success of Oppenheimer. While the Oscar-winning director has always been known for creating memorable action scenes, this new project appears to be taking things to another level with massive practical effects and ambitious filmmaking techniques.

Empire visited the production during filming in Scotland and got a first-hand look at how Nolan brought the sequence to life. The director reportedly used a combination of practical effects, wirework and forced-perspective camera tricks to create the illusion of enormous giants attacking Odysseus’ men. Several stunt performers were launched through the air during filming, while seven IMAX cameras captured every moment of the action.

For Nolan, however, the sequence is about much more than spectacle. “It was a fun sequence to shoot,” Nolan told Empire. “It’s really a thing of trying to get across the brutality. They’re warriors, and their weapons and armour is of a level of sophistication that Odysseus has never seen.”

The filmmaker explained that the battle serves an important purpose in the story beyond delivering an exciting action set piece. The attack challenges Odysseus as a leader and creates growing doubt among the men who have chosen to follow him.

“The point of the Laestrygonians in the story, as in the original poem, is to show in some ways the questionable nature of Odysseus’ leadership. To give his men reason to doubt him,” Nolan said. “And so what they come up against leaves them all shaken.”

That focus on character development is something Nolan has consistently emphasized throughout his career. Even his biggest action moments often revolve around emotional struggles and personal conflicts rather than simple spectacle. In The Odyssey, the dangers Odysseus faces are expected to test not only his survival skills but also his judgment, confidence and ability to lead.

The film is based on Homer’s legendary poem and follows Odysseus as he attempts to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along the way he encounters mythical creatures, powerful enemies and seemingly impossible challenges. The story also centers on his desire to reunite with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.

Alongside Damon and Hathaway, the cast includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. With a reported budget of around $250 million and production taking place across several countries, The Odyssey is one of the biggest projects of Nolan’s career.

While many details remain under wraps, Nolan’s latest comments suggest that the Laestrygonian battle could become one of the film’s standout moments. If his description is any indication, audiences can expect a sequence filled with chaos, danger and the kind of large-scale action that has become a trademark of the director’s work.

The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17.
