Uwe Boll’s ‘Citizen Vigilante’ Is Now Free to Watch Online — But Is It Worth Your Time?
Uwe Boll’s latest film Citizen Vigilante has arrived online with an unusual release strategy. The movie was made available for free through social media, giving viewers a limited chance to watch it before it disappears on June 27 at 10:00 a.m. EST.
While the release may attract attention from curious viewers, early reviews suggest that the film has become one of the most controversial projects of Boll’s career.
Directed by Boll, known for films such as Rampage and Postal, Citizen Vigilante follows an American man who leaves his old life behind and inherits a successful real estate business in Europe after his father’s death. After becoming frustrated with the justice system, he decides to take the law into his own hands and begins hunting down criminals who escaped punishment.
The film stars Armie Hammer as Sanders, a former military veteran who transforms into a self-appointed vigilante. Hammer’s performance has been one of the few parts of the movie that received some praise, with the actor bringing intensity and anger to a character who slowly becomes a public figure.
The story focuses on Sanders targeting people he believes deserve punishment, often approaching victims and their families after they feel the legal system has failed them. As his actions become more extreme, his mission turns into a worldwide media event, making him famous while also putting him in the sights of law enforcement.
Costas Mandylor plays Henry, an Interpol officer leading the search for Sanders as the authorities attempt to stop his campaign of revenge. The movie mixes serious crime drama with dark humor and exaggerated violence, creating a style that some viewers may find unusual.
However, critics have not been kind to Citizen Vigilante. The movie currently has a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, based on three reviews. While audience ratings appear much higher, professional reviewers have strongly criticized the film’s writing, message, and overall execution.

Brian Orndorf from Blu-ray.com gave the movie a negative review, writing that “It’s a big, dumb, clueless movie, and Boll wants it to be a dangerous one. Once again, he fails to understand his creative limitations.”
Jonathon Wilson of Ready Steady Cut was also highly critical, giving the film just 0.5 out of 5 stars. He described the movie as “utterly incurious and incomprehensible, but politically barbed,” while questioning the ideas behind its story.
Variety critic Todd Gilchrist was even harsher, suggesting the movie could hurt Armie Hammer’s return to acting. Gilchrist wrote that “The film is so astonishingly bad, it almost feels like writer-director-producer Uwe Boll is deliberately sabotaging his star Armie Hammer.”
Despite the negative reviews, Citizen Vigilante has gained attention because of its free online release and its controversial subject matter. The film appears designed to create discussion, whether viewers enjoy its style or criticize its choices.
For those interested in seeing what Boll has created, the movie is currently available to watch for free for a limited time. Whether it becomes a hidden discovery or another infamous entry in the director’s filmography remains to be seen.
