Millie Bobby Brown is back as Enola Holmes, but the early reaction to her latest mystery is much more divided than the response to the first two films.

According to the first reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, Enola Holmes 3 has debuted with a 67% Tomatometer score based on 12 critic reviews. While some reviewers still enjoy the series’ familiar style, others believe the third movie fails to match the charm and excitement of its predecessors.

The Enola Holmes franchise has become one of Netflix’s most successful original film series over the last few years. Brown’s version of Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister has been praised for her intelligence, humor, and determination, helping the first two movies attract a large audience. Those films mixed mystery with coming-of-age storytelling and introduced a cast filled with recognizable actors.

This time, the franchise returns with a few changes behind the scenes. Enola Holmes 3 is the first movie in the series to have a different director, and production also moved to Malta. Because of those changes, many fans were curious to see whether the new installment could maintain the quality of the earlier films.

The first wave of reviews suggests that critics are split.

Writing for Flickering Myth, Robert Kojder was not impressed with the sequel. He gave the movie a score of 2.5 out of 5 and described it as a step down from the earlier films. Kojder wrote that the movie delivers a weak central mystery and said it has “the odd aura of an unnecessary epilogue.” His review argues that the story struggles to justify why another sequel was needed.

Dionar Hidalgo of Algo Más Que Cine also gave the film a negative review, scoring it 5 out of 10. While Hidalgo found the movie enjoyable at times, the review says it plays things too safely instead of taking the series in a fresh direction. According to Hidalgo, “Enola Holmes 3 is another pleasant but frustratingly safe entry.” The review also points to an overcrowded script, fast editing, and performances that do not leave a strong impression.

William Bibbiani of TheWrap shared a similar opinion. In his review, he said the latest adventure misses the qualities that made the earlier movies stand out. Bibbiani wrote, “Enola Holmes 3 lacks the energy, the heft and the personality that made her previous adventures so satisfying.”

Not every critic was disappointed, however.

Danielle Solzman from Solzy at the Movies gave the film a positive 4 out of 5 rating. Solzman believes the movie succeeds by sticking with what has worked in the past instead of trying to reinvent the franchise. The review states, “Enola Holmes 3 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to.”

Alan French of FandomWire also gave the movie a positive review, scoring it 6 out of 10. French believes the third film continues to deliver the same mix of humor and mystery that fans have come to expect. According to the review, “Using the same style and wit as the previous entries, Enola Holmes continues to be one of Netflix’s few good franchises.”

Lissete Lanuza Sáenz from Fangirlish also highlighted the familiar formula. While the reviewer admitted the series is beginning to repeat itself, the movie still remains entertaining because of its charm. Sáenz wrote, “The formula is pretty much the same, and we can even say it’s starting to feel repetitive. But the charm is still there, and that means the movie is still pretty fun.”

The Rotten Tomatoes score could still change as more critics share their opinions. For now, Enola Holmes 3 appears to be the most divisive entry in the Netflix franchise, with reviewers agreeing that it stays true to the series but disagreeing on whether that is enough to make it another successful mystery adventure.
