George Lucas’ Surprise ‘Minions & Monsters’ Cameo Has Been Released & Fans Are Losing It

‘Minions & Monsters’ has spent the past few weeks proving it has more up its sleeve than banana jokes and yellow chaos. The latest entry in the ‘Despicable Me‘ franchise sends James and Henry, a brand new pair of Minions, back to the dawn of Hollywood, where they accidentally become movie stars before unleashing a wave of monsters onto the world. Along the way, the film leans hard into its love letter premise, stuffing its runtime with references to old Hollywood icons.

Director Pierre Coffin, who also voices every Minion in the film, co-wrote the screenplay with Brian Lynch, and the pair built an entire sequence around a fictional Hollywood movie museum. That museum, led by a tour guide named Olivia and voiced by Allison Janney, walks visitors past statues honoring cinema’s biggest legends, including nods to Humphrey Bogart, Orson Welles, and even Keanu Reeves as Neo from ‘The Matrix’.

Tucked inside that same museum sequence is the film’s biggest surprise, a voice cameo from Star Wars creator George Lucas playing a version of himself. Lucas appears as a living exhibit trapped inside a glass enclosure, pleading with Olivia to hand over his cellphone so he can call for help, only for her to refuse and point out that all he would do is call for help anyway. Lucas returns again in the film’s final scene, though without any additional dialogue.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri explained exactly how the studio managed to land one of the most private figures in Hollywood for the role. He told Collider that he first met Lucas about two years ago after learning the director was a devoted fan of Illumination’s slate, especially the Despicable Me franchise and its Minions.

Meledandri said that admiration eventually turned into an actual pitch once a character idea came up during development on the film. He explained he brought the concept to Coffin, Lynch, and producer Bill Ryan and simply asked what if they could get George, a suggestion he said the team initially treated as a joke.

According to Meledandri, Lucas said yes almost immediately once the offer was made. The producer described the response as an incredible moment for the studio, adding that Lucas has since told him he is already eager to return for a role in the next Minions movie.

Lucas recorded his voice work for the cameo during a session in Paris, and reports indicate the same museum scene also includes an animated nod to Orson Welles, a filmmaker Meledandri has spoken about admiring since his earliest days working in Hollywood. The cameo has quickly become one of the most talked-about details of the film’s release, with fans and critics pointing out how fitting it feels for a movie so openly obsessed with the history of moviemaking.

Some have also connected Lucas’ brief exchange with Olivia back to Star Wars itself, since her refusal to hand over his phone echoes Princess Leia’s famous plea for help in the original 1977 film. It is far from Lucas’ first time popping up on screen outside his own franchises, following past cameos in projects like Hook, Men in Black, and Beverly Hills Cop III, along with a voice role in a 2007 episode of Robot Chicken.

‘Minions & Monsters’ opened in theaters on July 1 ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, expanding wide over the holiday. The film also features the voices of Steve Carell, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Trey Parker, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr, and has been holding a 91 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
