'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' Episode 6 Recap & Ending Explained: Raj Returns With a Terrifying Warning

‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe‘ has never been shy about throwing its characters into stranger and stranger corners of the multiverse, and by episode 6 the show has settled into a rhythm. Every new reality forces Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke to confront a slightly warped version of their own lives, and this time is no exception.

The HBO Max series follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom after he accidentally breaks a quantum device built by Sheldon and Leonard, unleashing a multiverse catastrophe that keeps unraveling reality with every jump. Titled “Spoiler: Corn Is Delicious,” episode 6 picks up right where the group left off, still searching for a way home while getting sidetracked yet again.

This time, the gang lands in a universe where humans descended from cows instead of primates, meaning everyone eats grass and chews cud as a matter of course. It’s a mostly familiar world with one bizarre twist, right down to small details like the absence of a designated hitter in baseball and no Skechers slip-ons anywhere to be found.

Bert (Brian Posehn) and Kripke (John Ross Bowie) aren’t interested in sticking around this particular reality and decide to leave Stuart and Denise behind in search of something better. Their next jump goes horribly wrong, dropping them into a universe with no bottom at all, leaving them stuck in an endless free fall between realities.

Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and Denise (Lauren Lapkus), meanwhile, are perfectly content in the cow universe and in no rush to leave. The two share one of the episode’s more grounded scenes lying in bed together, contemplating their future as a couple, cud-chewing included.

Then Raj (Kunal Nayyar) shows up alive and well, this time as a doomsday survivalist trying to warn anyone who’ll listen that their world is ending. According to Raj, an entire galaxy known as GNZ11 has already vanished, along with other star systems at the edge of the universe, and at the current rate the whole universe could be gone within a few hundred years.

Stuart and Denise aren’t especially bothered by the news, since a universe-ending event centuries away feels like someone else’s problem for now. Back at the comic book shop, though, Stuart runs into another version of himself, who finally explains why the original device was entrusted to him in the first place.

That revelation seems to shift something in Stuart, because he ultimately decides to keep pushing forward instead of settling into a comfortable life in the cow universe. He and Denise order a quantum echo of the original device, and in the process of making their next jump, they inadvertently pull Kripke and Bert out of their endless free fall.

Lapkus has been candid about just how odd some of the show’s physical comedy gets, including the cud-chewing bits peppered throughout episode 6. Asked whether faking a cud-chewing motion ranked among the stranger notes she’s ever received as an actor, Lapkus joked that being asked to vomit more clearly or for longer into her own mouth would definitely be near the top of that list, while telling TVLine that even the show’s most emotionally grounded scenes still come wrapped in absurdity.

With four episodes left in the ten-episode first season, and HBO Max having already renewed the series for a second run, ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ shows no sign of running out of strange new worlds to explore.
