'Scooby-Doo: Origins' Wraps Filming, and Fans Finally Have a Premiere Window

Scooby-Doo has proven remarkably durable for a character created back in 1969, cycling through Saturday morning cartoons, theatrical films, and multiple live-action reinventions over the decades. Every few years, someone finds a new way to reimagine Mystery Inc., and this time it’s Netflix taking a crack at retelling how the gang first came together.

That project, currently going by the title ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’, comes from Midnight Radio’s Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, with Greg Berlanti attached as an executive producer. Production kicked off in Atlanta earlier this year, joining a growing slate of Netflix originals filming in the city alongside shows like ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Sweet Magnolias’.

That production has now officially wrapped, with Netflix confirming the live-action series is locked in for a 2027 premiere. The announcement gives fans their clearest timeline yet for a project that’s been slowly coming together since it was first revealed in early 2025.

The series reimagines the gang’s origin story, set during their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. Longtime friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves pulled into a haunting mystery involving a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder, and they team up with the pragmatic, science-minded Velma and the strange but undeniably handsome new kid, Fred, to crack the case together.

Mckenna Grace leads the ensemble as Daphne Blake, joined by Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser also joins the cast in a role Netflix has kept deliberately vague, with speculation swirling over whether he’s playing a suspect tied to the central mystery or lending his voice to Scooby himself.

That question ties into one of the more notable creative choices behind the entire project: this marks the first time Scooby-Doo has ever been portrayed as a fully live-action dog rather than through animation or a costumed performer. Netflix previously shared a first look at the pup earlier this year, showing him bounding across the show’s set and leaping into Shaggy’s arms while wearing his signature teal collar.

For a franchise with three theatrical films and nearly forty animated home entertainment releases already behind it, ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ represents Netflix’s attempt to bring a darker, more character-driven sensibility to material that’s traditionally leaned toward lighthearted spookiness. That tonal shift lines up with the streamer’s broader strategy of building out grounded, teen-focused mystery content on its Atlanta production slate.

With filming now complete, attention shifts to post-production as Netflix works toward locking in a more specific release date within the 2027 window. Fans of the franchise’s various live-action attempts, from the early-2000s theatrical films to 2009’s ‘Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins’, will have plenty of time to speculate over how this modern reimagining stacks up before it finally arrives.
