Nathan Fillion Just Gave Fans the ‘Firefly’ Update They’ve Been Waiting Months to Hear

‘Firefly‘ has spent more than two decades as one of television’s most persistent what-if stories, a show canceled after a single Fox season that somehow went on to build one of the most devoted fanbases in genre television. That devotion has kept revival hopes alive for years, but this spring finally brought fans something more concrete than wishful thinking.

Back in March, Nathan Fillion and several of his original castmates confirmed that an animated revival was genuinely in motion, built through his own production company, Collision33, in partnership with 20th Television Animation. The announcement came after a month-long social media campaign under the “Once We Were Spacemen” banner, with Fillion visiting castmates’ doors one by one in cryptic teaser videos before revealing the project publicly.

Since that initial reveal, updates have been scarce, leaving fans to wonder whether momentum was building behind the scenes or quietly stalling out. Fillion has now broken that silence, offering a status check that’s equal parts cautious and encouraging during a press run tied to his return as Guy Gardner in HBO’s ‘Lanterns’.

“Nothing happens fast is something I have learned. I have also learned not to give up. I’ve learned that this is something that I want to do, and the amount of support I’ve gotten from the fans has been tremendous and heartwarming, and makes it easier to go out and fight the fight,” Fillion told ScreenRant.

Despite the slow pace, several significant elements of the revival are already locked down. Married writing duo Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters have signed on as showrunners, marking a reunion of sorts since the pair first met while working on the original ‘Firefly’ series years ago. The new story is set to take place in the gap between the original show and its 2005 follow-up film, ‘Serenity’, giving the creative team a defined window to work within without disrupting established canon.

The returning voice cast reads like a full crew reunion, with Fillion joined by Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau and Adam Baldwin all expected to reprise their original roles. Series creator Joss Whedon isn’t directly involved in the animated project, though he’s reportedly given it his blessing, an endorsement that’s helped keep fan optimism alive even as formal studio confirmation continues to lag.

Fillion has previously acknowledged just how deeply this particular fandom has stuck with the show over the years, noting he’s never met a ‘Firefly’ fan, whether at a convention, an airport or just walking down the street, who hasn’t asked him whether more is coming. That kind of sustained loyalty appears to be part of what’s kept him personally invested in pushing the project forward despite the slow-moving development process.

With a formal green light from 20th Century Television still pending and no confirmed timeline in place, fans will likely need to stay patient a while longer before the Serenity’s crew officially reassembles.
