‘The Odyssey’ Just Surpassed $1.5 Billion Worldwide, and It’s Not Showing Any Signs of Stopping

Seven weekends into its theatrical run, most blockbusters have long since settled into a predictable pattern of steady decline, quietly making way for whatever comes next on the release calendar. Christopher Nolan’s mythic epic has instead spent that entire stretch rewriting expectations for what a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of ancient Greek poetry could accomplish at the global box office.

That defiance of typical box office gravity has become one of the defining storylines of the year for industry watchers. Week after week, ‘The Odyssey‘ has posted holds that analysts keep describing as remarkable, particularly for a film built around Matt Damon’s grueling journey home as Odysseus rather than the usual franchise-driven spectacle.

That momentum reached a striking new milestone this past weekend, with ‘The Odyssey’ officially crossing $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The film pulled in an insane $49.3 million overseas on its seventh weekend alone, representing just a 27.5% drop compared to the previous frame, a hold that compares favorably against ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ 23% decline during a similar stretch of its own historic run.

That international haul pushed the film’s overseas cume past $989 million across 82 markets, with major territories like Japan still yet to open in September. Combined with its $563.9 million domestic total, ‘The Odyssey’ has now reached a $1.55 billion global cume on a reported $250 million production budget, officially surpassing ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ and ‘The Avengers’ to become the 14th highest-grossing film in box office history.

The film’s climb up the all-time charts has carried extra significance for its studio as well. ‘The Odyssey’ has now overtaken ‘Furious 7’s’ $1.52 billion haul to become Universal’s second-biggest release of all time, trailing only the studio’s own ‘Jurassic World’ in the company’s history.

What makes the run particularly notable is how far it’s outpaced expectations set just weeks earlier. Industry watchers had pegged $1.7 billion as something of a ceiling for the film’s global potential just two weeks ago, but that number has effectively been locked in as a new floor given how resilient the film’s legs have proven internationally.

Premium format demand has continued fueling that staying power. IMAX has extended the film’s run in several markets through the end of September, and with Japan still set to add its own box office contribution, the film’s final tally could climb considerably higher before its theatrical run winds down.

Industry estimates now put ‘The Odyssey’s’ eventual global total somewhere between $1.75 billion and $1.9 billion, a range that would have seemed almost unthinkable for an original, adult-skewing epic at the start of the summer season. The film crossed $1.6 billion just this weekend alone, according to the latest tracking figures.

For Nolan, the achievement adds yet another record to an already historic run, having already become his highest-grossing film ever earlier this summer. For an industry still working to prove that original theatrical spectacle can still draw massive crowds without a built-in franchise behind it, ‘The Odyssey’ has become the clearest evidence yet that audiences are more than willing to show up when the ambition matches the scale.
