Zach Cregger Just Named the Most Terrifying ‘Resident Evil’ Enemy, and It’s Not Who You’d Expect

Zach Cregger has spent much of the press cycle for his upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ film proving he understands the franchise on a level most adaptations never bother to reach. Between deep-cut references to specific games and candid admissions about his own history with the series, Cregger has consistently positioned himself as a genuine fan first and a director second.

That fan perspective has surfaced again in his latest round of interviews, where the conversation shifted from what inspired his movie to which moment in the games actually rattled him the most as a player. Given how many terrifying creatures populate the ‘Resident Evil’ catalog, from lumbering zombies to grotesque mutations, fans might expect Cregger to point to one of the franchise’s more iconic monsters.

Instead, Cregger says he thinks the giant baby from ‘Resident Evil: Village’ is the scariest infected in the franchise, a specific and unexpected pick that has already sparked plenty of reaction online. He was quick to add some context to that claim, noting that he experienced the moment in virtual reality, which he acknowledged likely intensified the horror significantly.

Cregger’s comments trace back to a specific sequence within ‘Village,’ where players enter a dollhouse, descend into the basement, and assemble a large doll on a table before being hunted by the towering infant creature that emerges. According to Cregger, it wasn’t just the visual of the monster that got under his skin, but the sound design surrounding it, describing how the baby’s cries combined with the lights cutting out while he had to run and hide beneath a bed.

That combination proved genuinely too much for him in the moment. Cregger said it was the only time playing a video game that he actually had to stop entirely, taking off the VR headset, making himself a cup of coffee, and returning to finish the sequence later once he’d calmed down.

He didn’t hold back on just how effective he found the scene either, bluntly calling it terrifying and making clear the experience left a lasting impression well beyond a typical jump scare. It’s a level of candor that fits the pattern Cregger has established throughout his ‘Resident Evil’ press tour, consistently favoring specific, personal anecdotes over vague marketing talk about scares.

Zach Cregger Reveals Exactly Which ‘Resident Evil’ Games Shaped His Vision for the Reboot

Cregger has been open about wanting his ‘Resident Evil’ adaptation to replicate the specific feeling of playing the games rather than simply referencing familiar characters or storylines. His film follows Bryan, an ordinary medical courier caught in the middle of Raccoon City’s viral outbreak, a deliberate choice to center an untrained civilian rather than a combat-ready franchise veteran like Leon Kennedy.

That approach mirrors the vulnerability Cregger described feeling during his own encounter with the giant baby in ‘Village,’ where players are similarly stripped of resources and forced into a purely defensive, run-and-hide mode. Whether that same sense of visceral dread translates from a first-person gaming experience to a theatrical horror film remains to be seen once audiences get their first full look.

With ‘Resident Evil’ shot for IMAX release and hitting theaters on September 18, Cregger’s track record with horror through ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons’ has already built plenty of anticipation heading into the film’s debut.

Do you agree with Zach Cregger that the giant baby from Resident Evil Village is the franchise’s most terrifying enemy?
