Netflix’s First Trailer For ‘East of Eden’ Teases a Descent Into Steinbeck’s Darkest Family Saga

Prestige literary adaptations have become something of a Netflix specialty over the past few years, and the streamer’s next major swing draws from one of American literature’s most towering works. John Steinbeck’s sprawling 1952 novel has already inspired a beloved 1955 film starring James Dean, and now it’s getting the limited series treatment with a cast built for awards season buzz.

The project has been percolating since 2022, when Zoe Kazan first signed on to adapt the material with Florence Pugh attached to star, and production finally wrapped after the series was officially greenlit in late 2024. Kazan is the writer behind the adaptation, working from Steinbeck’s novel of the same name.

Now, the account DiscussingFilm has shared the first full trailer, confirming that ‘East of Eden‘ will follow the intertwined destinies of the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley, with Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, and Mike Faist leading the ensemble. In the footage, Pugh’s Cathy Ames meets and marries Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, though her smile fades almost as quickly as it appears. The story eventually intersects with the Hamilton family, including Samuel Hamilton played by Ciarán Hinds, an Irishman who settles in California and comes to know the land intimately.

Tension simmers early between the Trask brothers over Cathy’s arrival. Charles Trask, played by Mike Faist, warns his brother that “a girl like that doesn’t just fall out of the sky” before later pleading with Adam to “get rid of her and throw her out” because she’s “going to tear you to pieces.” Cathy is introduced bloodied and crawling through the grass before the Trask family discovers her, and Adam later tells her she warms the entire house even without leaving her room.

Pugh’s Cathy is being positioned as the story’s central antihero, a role originated onscreen decades ago by Jo Van Fleet. Van Fleet actually won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress playing Cathy in the original film, which speaks to how meaty this character has always been for performers. Joseph Zada steps into the role of Cal that James Dean famously played, while Joe Anders takes on Cal’s twin brother Aron, and Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, and Martha Plimpton round out the extended Trask and Hamilton households.

Behind the camera, the series splits directing duties between two filmmakers. Garth Davis directs the first four episodes while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre helms the remaining three, with both also serving as executive producers alongside Kazan and co-showrunner Jeb Stuart. Kazan wrote the entire series herself, sharing one co-writing credit with Alexander Chee on the sixth episode.

Timing-wise, ‘East of Eden’ arrives at an interesting moment for several of its stars. Zada is also set to play Haymitch Abernathy in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,’ Pugh is juggling roles in ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and Abbott has reportedly been cast as Professor X in the MCU’s upcoming X-Men film. All seven episodes of ‘East of Eden’ will drop at once on Netflix on Thursday, October 1.
