Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey Confirmed as the Lead of Marvel’s Upcoming ‘X-Men’ Reboot

Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the eventual arrival of mutants into the main MCU timeline, dropping hints across post-credits scenes and background cameos without ever fully committing to a dedicated project. That long wait officially ended this year, as the studio began assembling a new generation of X-Men under a fresh creative team.

Sadie Sink first stepped into the mutant corner of the MCU earlier this year, making her debut as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ In that film, Jean Grey initially functions as an antagonist to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, her psychic powers spiraling out of control after her sister is captured by the Department of Damage Control.

That introduction has now been confirmed as the true launching point for Marvel’s rebooted ‘X-Men‘ film, with Sink set to headline the movie as its central character. Jean Grey, one of the original founding members of the X-Men in Marvel Comics, will anchor the story as director Jake Schreier builds out this new mutant team for the MCU’s next era.

The full cast for the untitled ‘X-Men’ project was officially unveiled at Disney’s D23 event, confirming Sink alongside Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as the villainous Mister Sinister. The film is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028, coinciding with the MCU’s 20th anniversary.

Marvel appears to be deliberately building this iteration of the team around younger performers, positioning Jean Grey as a foundational building block for the franchise’s future rather than simply reintroducing an already-established team. Sink has spoken publicly about that creative choice, telling Entertainment Weekly it felt like a “smart choice” to start the franchise with a younger generation of mutants who haven’t yet formed the team audiences know from the comics.

Notably, the MCU’s version of Jean Grey has been reimagined without prior connection to Professor X or the wider mutant community, a deliberate departure from her comic book origins as one of Xavier’s earliest students. That approach gives Schreier and his creative team room to build her relationship to the X-Men from the ground up on screen.

Sink has already begun shaping her own understanding of the character heading into production, describing early conversations with Schreier about where Jean’s arc goes next. Speaking about what makes the X-Men compelling as a group, Sink explained that their appeal comes from being “incredibly flawed” characters who may have done bad things, according to Variety.

She elaborated further, noting that Jean’s ongoing struggle with her powers will remain central to her development as a hero, adding that understanding that struggle “makes her really well-rounded,” according to Variety. That framing lines up closely with how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ portrayed Jean, positioning her power and pain as inseparable rather than treating her as a straightforward antagonist.

With Jean Grey’s backstory already partially established through ‘Brand New Day’ and the wider X-Men cast now locked in, anticipation continues building for how Schreier will bring Marvel’s mutants into the MCU’s next chapter. Filming is expected to begin in 2027 ahead of the film’s 2028 release date.
