MCU Stars Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell Share New Photo Together Ahead of Their Broadway & ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Reunion
Marvel Cinematic Universe co-stars don’t always get the chance to reunite outside their comic book roles, but every so often a project comes along that lets two familiar faces share the stage again in a completely different context. That’s exactly what’s happening with two of the franchise’s most beloved actors this fall.
Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell, who first crossed paths through their respective MCU roles as Loki and Peggy Carter, have spent much of this year building anticipation for their reunion in a very different kind of project. A newly shared photo of the pair together, posted by fan account Cosmic Marvel, has fans buzzing once again about their upcoming collaboration.
That reunion centers on “Much Ado About Nothing,” Jamie Lloyd’s acclaimed staging of the Shakespeare classic, which is set to transfer from London’s West End to Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre this fall. Hiddleston and Atwell will reprise their roles as Benedick and Beatrice, the play’s sharp-tongued sparring lovers, following a record-breaking run at London’s Drury Lane Theatre earlier this year.
The production marks a significant milestone specifically for Atwell, who will be stepping onto a Broadway stage for the very first time despite two decades of acclaimed theater work in London’s West End. Reflecting on the significance of that moment, Atwell said, “After 20 years on the stages of London’s West End, it is a huge honor for me to be invited to make my Broadway debut playing ‘Beatrice’ in this electric production of Much Ado About Nothing.”
Hiddleston, who previously brought Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” to Broadway in 2019 under Lloyd’s direction, expressed similarly personal excitement about the role. “For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to play ‘Benedick’ in Much Ado About Nothing. Working with Jamie Lloyd and Hayley Atwell on Shakespeare’s most warm-hearted play has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my performing life,” Hiddleston said, according to Variety.
Director Jamie Lloyd, whose past credits include acclaimed revivals of “Sunset Boulevard” and “Waiting for Godot,” has been vocal about the creative chemistry between his two leads. He described the pairing as “magical” from their very first rehearsal together, crediting that connection as central to the production’s success in London before it makes the jump across the Atlantic.
The Broadway production is set to begin previews on October 31, with opening night scheduled for November 19, running for a limited 10-week engagement through January 10. The full Broadway cast reprises its London counterparts, including Mason Alexander Park, Mara Huf, Mika Onyx Johnson, Gerald Kyd, Forbes Masson, Phillip Olagoke, James Phoon, and Tim Steed rounding out the ensemble.
Both stars have already picked up significant recognition for their performances in the roles, having earned nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress at the Standard Theatre Awards, along with Critics’ Circle Award nods for Best Shakespearean Performances during the show’s London run. That critical acclaim, paired with the production’s status as Time Out’s “#1 Best Show of the Year” in London, has generated considerable buzz ahead of its Broadway premiere.
With previews now just weeks away, the latest photo of Hiddleston and Atwell together only adds to the growing excitement among fans eager to see two MCU favorites trade Shakespearean barbs on the Broadway stage.
