‘Dungeons & Dragons 2’ Isn’t Dead Yet, Hasbro Is Actively Shopping the Finished Script

Fan-favorite films that underperform at the box office often find themselves stuck in a frustrating limbo, beloved enough to keep hope alive but not profitable enough to guarantee a follow-up. ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ has spent the past few years living in exactly that gray area, earning glowing reviews without ever translating that goodwill into blockbuster ticket sales.

The 2023 adaptation starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, and Hugh Grant, and it earned praise across the board for its cast, humor, and faithful tone toward the beloved tabletop game. Despite that critical success, the film only pulled in roughly $205 million worldwide against a $150 million budget, a result Paramount clearly considered too underwhelming to greenlight a sequel outright.

That hasn’t stopped rights holder Hasbro from continuing to push for a follow-up behind the scenes. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein confirmed that Hasbro remains determined to find a new studio home for “Dungeons & Dragons 2,” with a completed screenplay for the sequel already sitting ready to go, according to The Playlist.

Daley and Goldstein made the update while appearing on The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast to promote their new Apple TV action comedy “Mayday.” According to The Playlist, the pair confirmed they had already written a full sequel script, though the project’s budget remains a significant obstacle standing between the finished screenplay and an actual greenlight.

That budget concern isn’t new information. Speaking with ScreenRant back at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldstein had previously revealed the sequel script exists but questioned whether it would ever “see the light of day for a number of financial reasons,” acknowledging just how expensive these fantasy films are to produce even when fans clearly want more.

Complicating matters further, both companies behind the original film have undergone significant corporate changes in recent years. Paramount was acquired by Skydance Media in August 2025, while eOne, the production banner that co-produced “Honor Among Thieves” and was once a Hasbro subsidiary, was acquired by Lionsgate back in December 2023, according to TheWrap.

Daley pointed to a specific set of circumstances that he believes doomed the original film’s box office performance. According to The Playlist, Daley argued the movie suffered from particularly unfortunate timing when Paramount released it in March 2023, landing just days before Universal and Illumination’s massive hit “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

Beyond that scheduling collision, Daley noted the film also arrived roughly a month after Wizards of the Coast made controversial changes to the tabletop game’s official licensing rules, a decision that prompted many longtime D&D fans to boycott the franchise entirely. Combined with what he described as marketing that didn’t do enough to reach audiences unfamiliar with the source material, Daley called it “a perfect storm” working against the film’s commercial success.

Adding another layer of uncertainty, a separate live-action “Dungeons & Dragons” television series that had been in development for Paramount+ was scrapped by the streamer in May 2024, before reportedly finding a new home at Netflix in February 2025. That shifting landscape across both film and television suggests Hasbro remains committed to keeping the D&D franchise alive on screen, even as individual projects continue bouncing between studios.

With a finished script in hand and Hasbro actively searching for a new partner, “Dungeons & Dragons 2” remains a genuine possibility rather than a dead project, even if its path to production stays uncertain.
