Netflix Is Bringing Dungeons & Dragons’ Most Iconic Vampire to Life With a New ‘Ravenloft’ Live-Action Series

Live-action Dungeons & Dragons adaptations have had a notoriously rocky road to the screen, with multiple attempts stalling out before ever making it past the development stage. That history of false starts made it feel like only a matter of time before Netflix’s own D&D ambitions hit a similar snag.

That’s essentially what just happened, though the outcome ended up being more of a pivot than a full collapse. Netflix had spent the past year and a half developing “The Forgotten Realms,” a live-action D&D series with Shawn Levy executive producing and Drew Crevello writing, but that project is no longer moving forward at the streamer.

In its place, Netflix is now developing “Ravenloft,” a new live-action series based on the gothic horror setting of Dungeons & Dragons, from writer and executive producer John August, executive producer Alfonso Cuarón, and Hasbro Entertainment, according to Deadline.

Described as a prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance, “Ravenloft” and its Domains of Dread setting will tackle character-driven stories rooted in dark magic and supernatural intrigue. At the center of the story is the origin of Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, one of D&D’s most notorious villains, whose descent from tragic antihero to undead tyrant is fueled by themes of power, love, obsession, and loss, according to SFF Gazette.

That focus on Strahd’s transformation gives the series room to tell something closer to a character study than a straightforward fantasy adventure, leaning into the kind of morally complex villain origin story that’s become increasingly popular across streaming platforms. Ravenloft itself was introduced back in 1983 by Tracy and Laura Hickman, and it has since become one of the most-played settings in D&D history, spawning more than a hundred official novels, tabletop RPG modules, and video games, according to Deadline.

August’s involvement brings a proven track record in gothic storytelling to the project, having previously written or co-written five Tim Burton films, including “Big Fish,” “Corpse Bride,” “Dark Shadows,” and “Frankenweenie,” alongside “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” That sensibility positions “Ravenloft” alongside Netflix’s existing supernatural hit “Wednesday,” which shares a similar gothic tone thanks in part to Burton’s own involvement as director and executive producer.

Cuarón’s presence adds another significant layer of prestige to the project, marking his return to Netflix eight years after “Roma” made history as the first Netflix film to earn a Best Picture nomination. According to ScreenRant, this Ravenloft series is separate from Cuarón’s existing first-look deal with Apple TV, which began back in 2019, meaning it represents an entirely new collaboration between the filmmaker and the streamer.

Rounding out the production team, August will executive produce alongside Gabriel Marano for Hasbro Entertainment, while Cuarón produces through his Esperanto Filmoj banner alongside Richard Schwartz and Gaby Rodriguez.

Hasbro has made landing a live-action D&D series a priority in recent years, particularly following the critical success of 2023’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” That push has proven difficult so far, with a previous television adaptation from Rawson Marshall Thurber and Crevello receiving a straight-to-series order at Paramount+ back in 2023 before ultimately falling apart entirely.

With “The Forgotten Realms” now shelved and “Ravenloft” taking its place as Netflix’s flagship D&D bet, the streamer appears determined to find the right creative formula for bringing the tabletop franchise to a broader audience. Given the combined pedigree of August and Cuarón, expectations for the project’s tone and ambition are already running high among fans of the franchise.
