The Last of Us‘ has spent over a decade proving that post-apocalyptic storytelling doesn’t have to sacrifice emotional depth for spectacle, and that reputation has only grown as the franchise expanded from a single game into a sprawling multimedia universe. Between two critically acclaimed titles, a hit HBO adaptation, and countless awards along the way, the series has become one of gaming’s defining modern franchises.

That expansion hasn’t come without complications lately. Naughty Dog scrapped its multiplayer spin-off back in 2023 after years of development, and creator Neil Druckmann recently stepped away from his creative involvement in the HBO series ahead of its third season, leaving fans wondering just how much runway the franchise actually has left.

Those concerns can apparently be put to rest. Speaking with Gene Park of The Washington Post, Druckmann confirmed that Naughty Dog is far from finished with the franchise, revealing there are multiple new projects already taking shape behind the scenes.

“We’re not done with ‘The Last of Us,'” Druckmann said. “There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.” The comment marks the clearest signal yet of new franchise content since the multiplayer project was shelved, though Druckmann stopped short of offering any specifics about what those projects actually are.

Context matters here, since Druckmann made these comments while also addressing the upcoming third season of the HBO adaptation, a season he’s not creatively involved in. He was careful to draw a clear line between the show and the games, framing Naughty Dog as the enduring steward of the franchise regardless of what happens with the television side of things.

That distinction has fueled plenty of speculation about what form these mystery projects could take. ‘The Last of Us’ has already branched into comics, a stage play, and even a horror experience at Universal Studios, so there’s no guarantee any of this points toward a traditional sequel like a potential Part III.

Druckmann has historically been cagey, and at times outright discouraging, about the prospects of a third mainline game, previously telling fans not to bet on more entries after the story concluded with Part II. That makes this latest comment feel notably more optimistic than his usual tone on the subject, even without concrete details attached.

Part of the uncertainty comes down to bandwidth. Naughty Dog’s primary focus at the moment is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the studio’s ambitious sci-fi project that Druckmann is directing, and which remains the biggest priority pulling resources away from anything new in the ‘Last of Us’ universe.

It’s also worth noting that the PlayStation 5 generation has been unusual for Naughty Dog specifically, marking the first console cycle since the studio’s founding in 1984 without a brand-new game release, since its output so far has consisted of remasters and remakes. That drought has only intensified fan anticipation for whatever comes next, whether that’s tied to ‘The Last of Us’ or Intergalactic.

For now, Druckmann’s comments function more as reassurance than announcement, a signal that the franchise’s story isn’t finished even if the details remain locked away. Given how tightly Naughty Dog has controlled information around its projects in the past, fans should probably brace for a long wait before “when the time is right” actually arrives.

Still, for a fanbase that’s spent years wondering whether the games side of the franchise had quietly wrapped up, even a vague confirmation carries weight.
