‘Zootopia 3’ Will Keep Leaning Into Nick and Judy’s Will-They-Won’t-They Tension, Director Says

Disney Animation has built one of its most devoted modern fanbases around a fox and a rabbit whose partnership has sparked endless debate since their very first case together. Ever since ‘Zootopia‘ introduced Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde back in 2016, audiences have been split over whether the pair’s chemistry should stay strictly platonic or evolve into something more.

That debate only intensified with ‘Zootopia 2,’ which leaned heavily into romantic-coded imagery between the two characters, from a trip to a spot designed for married couples to a steady stream of moments fans have affectionately dubbed “Wildehopps.” With the sequel going on to become Disney’s highest-grossing animated film of all time, the studio has plenty of incentive to keep that tension simmering as the franchise moves forward.

Now director Byron Howard is confirming exactly that. Speaking about the direction of ‘Zootopia 3,’ Howard said the franchise will continue tackling another aspect of the relationship between predator and prey characters, specifically referencing the ongoing divide among fans over whether Nick and Judy should become a couple or remain friends.

Howard explained that seeing fans so invested in the debate speaks to just how much people have come to believe in these characters as real. “I think we’re going to keep leaning into that,” Howard said, according to The Walt Disney Company’s official news site, signaling the will-they-won’t-they dynamic isn’t going away anytime soon.

Howard’s comments came as part of a broader discussion about how the creative team approaches sequels within the ‘Zootopia’ universe. He noted that with each follow-up, the goal is to look back at what resonated with audiences the first time around in order to expand the world and push the characters further, rather than simply repeating familiar beats.

That philosophy extends beyond the Nick and Judy relationship itself. Howard also confirmed the third film will continue exploring the broader predator-versus-prey dynamic that’s anchored the franchise since its original film, alongside the procedural mystery format that’s become a signature element of both prior installments.

‘Zootopia 3’ was officially confirmed to be in early development during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 back in August, where Jared Bush, chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, shared the news with fans at the Honda Center. Bush and other cast and creative team members, including stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan, also teased that birds will play some kind of role in the upcoming film.

Anticipation for a third installment had been building well before Disney made anything official, with Goodwin telling The Hollywood Reporter at the ‘Zootopia 2’ premiere back in November that she was actively trying to manifest a follow-up movie. Bush similarly expressed enthusiasm for continuing the franchise, noting the world of Zootopia still has plenty of unexplored territory, given the story so far has only covered one city on one continent.

Given how much attention the Nick and Judy dynamic has generated across both existing films, Howard’s comments suggest the third installment won’t be shying away from that conversation, even if a definitive answer about the characters’ romantic future remains unclear for now. Whether the franchise eventually commits to a romantic pairing or continues keeping fans guessing appears to be a deliberate creative choice rather than an oversight.

With ‘Zootopia 3’ still in the early stages of production, Disney has not announced a release date or further story details, and it remains unclear exactly how far along the film has progressed. Given that animated features typically take four to five years to complete, some early estimates have suggested the film could arrive around 2030, though Disney has yet to confirm that timeline.

For now, fans will have to keep speculating about where Nick and Judy’s relationship ultimately lands, armed with confirmation that the creative team has no intention of resolving that tension anytime soon.
