Spider-Man: Brand New Day Just Joined an Exclusive Box Office Club Only One Other Superhero Movie Has Ever Reached

The summer box office has delivered its fair share of surprises this year, but few have been as quietly dominant as Marvel’s latest web-slinging outing. While flashier debuts have come and gone, one film has simply refused to budge from the top spot, week after week, through a stretch of the calendar that usually favors new competition.

That kind of staying power doesn’t happen often in franchise filmmaking, where even beloved sequels tend to get bumped after a weekend or two by the next big thing. Yet as the summer movie season wound down over the long Labor Day weekend, this particular Spidey adventure kept climbing rather than fading.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has officially spent six consecutive weekends at number one at the domestic box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter, making it only the second superhero film in history to hit that milestone, joining 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in that rare club.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film pulled in roughly $22 million over the four-day Labor Day frame, according to The Hollywood Reporter, helping it cross the $900 million mark domestically and putting it within reach of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, which currently holds the all-time domestic record at $936.6 million.

What makes this milestone particularly notable is the nature of the streak itself. According to Screen Rant, ‘Brand New Day’ has now spent six consecutive weekends at number one, officially the longest unbroken run at the top for any MCU movie, surpassing the five-weekend streaks previously set by 2018’s ‘Black Panther’ and its 2022 sequel ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

‘No Way Home’, by comparison, built its own six-weekend total a bit differently. The film spent four consecutive weekends at number one before Scream knocked it down, only for it to climb back to the top for two additional, non-consecutive weekends, per Screen Rant. ‘Brand New Day’ has done it in one uninterrupted stretch, a distinction that matters when ranking box office dominance.

Much of that consistency comes down to weak competition. Screen Rant notes that the films releasing in Spidey’s wake have largely underperformed or flopped outright, including titles like ‘One Night Only’, ‘The Dog Stars’, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’, ‘Coyote vs. Acme’, and ‘The End of Oak Street’, none of which managed to seriously challenge Spider-Man’s grip on the top spot.

Globally, the picture is just as staggering. ‘Brand New Day’ has surpassed $2.33 billion worldwide, according to The Hollywood Reporter, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time behind only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, after recently overtaking ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. Whether it can eventually catch ‘Endgame’s $2.799 billion global haul remains to be seen, especially since its early trajectory had it trailing that MCU predecessor on several fronts.

The film wasn’t the only notable performer over the holiday frame. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, also starring ‘Brand New Day’ lead Tom Holland, landed at number two with an estimated $16.4 million, pushing its domestic total to $588.1 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For a franchise that has already redefined what a modern Spider-Man movie can accomplish commercially, this new record adds another layer to what’s shaping up as one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the year. With the all-time domestic crown potentially within reach in the coming weeks, all eyes remain on just how far this particular web can stretch.
